Smith-Williams: "You're Born Into It"
Redshirt junior defensive end James Smith-Williams has always been very familiar with the State-Carolina rivalry.
You say it every week, you focus on you, not them.
Yep.
That's how you win games, focus on yourself.
What do you see from them on the film, at 2-8?
It’s definitely misleading to watch the fil because they are a solid ball club. They’ve been in a lot of close games.
We all know it’s rivarly reek and you never know what you’re going to get. They are going to play as hard they can, but we will too.
What was your introduction to this NC State-Carolina rivalry?
I’m from the area so you're born this way. Either you like them or you don’t.
That's the way it's always been.
What was it that swayed you?
My family. You’re born into it. You already have your loyalties before you’re born.
So your whole family are State fans?
Yep, that’s exactly what I’m saying.
What did they do, put a red blanket on you?
I don't remember, but I wouldn't be surprised.
Did you play the game two years ago over there?
No, I was out with injury.
Going over this time, what is about NC State and playing over there that has been successful?
We have great fans that travel super well.
They view it as kind of a home game in the area. Thirty-minute drive, so there is a lot of support, a lot of fans. Regardless of who we are playing we always get up for that game.
What have you seen from their offense?
They are talented guys who only give up a sack a game. So it’s going to be a challenge for us and it’s a big challenge for them too.
I can’t wait to compete against them.
