Finley Talks Marshall... His Weapons
NC State senior quarterback Ryan Finley met with the media and talked about the upcoming game against Marshall, Cary Angeline, his other weapons, and much more.
How did you treat the week off? Was it a situation where you kind of got away from football or did you start preparing for Marshall?
I spent the off-days at the hotel with a bunch of the guys. We had a lot of fun. We took a couple of days off to be honest to get away from it and then started on Marshall.
It was kind of a best of both worlds.
You guys played Marshall last year. Can you rely on last year's film? Did you look at that some?
Obviously I think one of the major games you have to watch when you're playing a team twice in a row is just your game from last year.
What you did well, what they did well against you, what you can probably see from basically what they did last year. So yeah, it's definitely a good game to watch.
Were the days off a nice reset?
I think for me, for us, it's just about staying in rhythm, so bye week, whatever, as long as you can find a way to stay in a rhythm is a nice thing.
You get Cary eligible this week. What have you seen from him?
Well, he, he's a huge target, and he has really, really good hands. I think he's smart. He's reliable. He's an effort guy. He's always giving great effort.
Just got really tremendous hands to be honest. I can't remember the last time I've seen him a drop the ball. He's really long. He covers a lot of ground.
He'll be a really good option on third downs... a big-bodied guy against zone. It will be good to have him back.
Do you really notice a 6'7 guy out there as a quarterback?
I think you do.
Not so much as throwing on the run when he's moving, but when he is kind of finding areas to sit down. I think it's more of a catch-radius.
The guy just has huge hands. He just makes every catch look easy, so he's one you throw it hard on him and expect him to catch it.
Have you seen any growth in the running game throughout practice?
Definitely.
I think we're going to be hitting on all cylinders this week. I'm just excited that going.
What does a guy like Trent Pennix add?
He's a young guy. I think Trent is going to be a really good player.
Anybody's first two games of their college career probably won't go as well as you hope but Trent is going to get a lot better. I think he wants to be good, which is half the battle.
He's had a really good two days of practice so far. I'm excited to get him out there.
What are your thoughts on Thayer's route-running?
He's very precise.
He's one of those guys have worked on it. It's easy to go out there and just kind of run a five-yard out, but Thayer will run it skip-stepping with an outside release, shimmy and then go out.
Thayer is a repetition guy. I think a lot of what you see in the game is something Thayer has probably repped at some point.
