NC State right-handed pitcher Derrick Smith has been drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 17th round, 497th overall, in the 2025 MLB Draft.

After only three appearances as a freshman, the White Bear Lake, Minn. product shone in his sophomore season in 2024, leading the Wolfpack with eight saves. His final save of the year came in the NCAA Athens Super Regional finale against seventh-seeded Georgia, a three-inning stint that clinched the Pack’s spot in the College World Series.

Smith ended the 2024 season with a 3-2 record , a 4.55 ERA, 41 strikeouts, and 11 walks over 29-2/3 innings pitched in 24 appearances. His numbers in 2025, hindered by an injury to begin the year, dipped as the righty made only six relief outings in which he amasssed eight strikeouts and six walks in just three complete innings of work.

I'm not smart enough to figure out this entire Smith saga. I'm hopeful that one of the, "in the know guys", will educate us all….

My thought when he entered the portal was that he was doing so as a fall back or leverage for the draft and likely would not actually end up at another school.
Just a guy on the sunshine squad.
