
MLB DRAFT: Smith Selected By Rockies
NC State right-handed pitcher Derrick Smith has been drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 17th round, 497th overall, in the 2025 MLB Draft.
After only three appearances as a freshman, the White Bear Lake, Minn. product shone in his sophomore season in 2024, leading the Wolfpack with eight saves. His final save of the year came in the NCAA Athens Super Regional finale against seventh-seeded Georgia, a three-inning stint that clinched the Pack’s spot in the College World Series.
Smith ended the 2024 season with a 3-2 record , a 4.55 ERA, 41 strikeouts, and 11 walks over 29-2/3 innings pitched in 24 appearances. His numbers in 2025, hindered by an injury to begin the year, dipped as the righty made only six relief outings in which he amasssed eight strikeouts and six walks in just three complete innings of work.
