BEYOND THE BOARDS: How Russell Wilson Was THIS Close to Never Playing for NC State
Russell Wilson’s Recruitment — What Really Happened
Russell wasn’t a big-time recruit
- 2-star prospect from Collegiate School in Richmond, VA
- Played both football and baseball
- Had very few offers — mainly Richmond, with Duke and UNC sniffing around
NC State saw him at camp and jumped
- Summer 2006: Russell camped at NC State
- Blew away Chuck Amato and recruiting coordinator Kurt Cignetti
- Received an offer on the spot after impressing at camp
UNC passed on offering him — here's why
- UNC had a commitment from Mike Paulus (top-rated QB in the class)
- Frank Cignetti (UNC OC, Kurt's brother) liked Russell but didn’t want to jeopardize Paulus’ status
- UNC's decision not to offer opened the door for NC State
Amato gets fired — Wilson takes a visit to Duke
- Fall 2006 season goes poorly for NC State, Amato fired
- Russell visits Duke on an official visit
- New staff (Tom O'Brien) reportedly gives him an ultimatum mid-visit:
- “Leave Duke now or you won’t have a spot at NC State”
Wilson leaves the visit early and reaffirms his commitment
Baseball played a role
- Russell planned to play baseball at NC State too
- Had a relationship with Elliott Avent and the baseball staff
- That multi-sport angle helped solidify his commitment
Early NC State buzz was real
- Redshirted in 2007 but dominated on scout team
- Coaches and insiders quickly realized he was special
- Not Tom O'Brien's "prototype" QB, but hard to keep off the field
NC State dodged multiple bullets
- Could’ve lost him to UNC if they had offered
- Could’ve lost him to Duke during the transition
- Almost never played for NC State at all
The coaching change almost changed everything
- Tom O'Brien wanted big pocket passers
- Wilson didn’t fit that mold but earned his place anyway
The rest is history
- Went on to star at NC State, then Wisconsin, then the NFL
- Super Bowl champion, likely Hall of Famer
- Still one of the most significant recruiting wins in NC State history
