NC State tied Appalachian State, 0-0, in the season opener for both schools. The Wolfpack returns to the pitch Sunday at home against East Carolina. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. between the in-state rivals.

Head coach Tim Santoro and midfielder Jaiden Thomas addressed the media following the stalemate between the Wolfpack and the Mountaineers. The Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. graduate student logged 39 minutes on the pitch in her return to play after missing the 2023 season due to injury.

I will never call it a "pitch". I will forever refer to it as a "field". Just as I will forever call it "soccer", and not "football". I grew up long before we tried to adapt to British terminology.

The Brits invented the term soccer.

Yes, and they complain that the term "soccer" is used in the United States, Australia, and elsewhere.

My point is that I'm not going along with these new fads to convert to the current British terminology.

The "fad" is nothing new among people who follow the sport globally, and is just a natural result of England (as well as several other European nations) being far more advanced in the way they play and coach the game than the U.S. I say that as a guy pushing 50 who has played and coached the sport my whole life right here in NC. They invented the game and have a much longer and more rich history with it so it is to be expected that we would follow their lead when it comes to jargon, much like they probably do in some other areas of culture where the U.S. is dominant.

That demonstrates weakness and admission of inferiority...where people are being submissive and deferential to another group who supposedly has "superiority" to us.

We don't call the entire sport "futball"/"football", obviously because it would conflict with American football. If we're not going to submit on the biggest terminology of all, why defer to them on the name we give to the playing surface? It's silly.

The term "pitch" is used by the British in the way we use "field", for all sports...not just soccer. So I guess we need to change our terminology for our baseball fields, and American football fields, etc....and start calling them "baseball pitches" and "football pitches".

Also, let's not call it "track and field" anymore...it's now "track and pitch".

Uh oh....the official name of our soccer stadium at NC State is still "Dail Soccer Field"

I assume we can expect an official name change to "Dail Soccer Pitch" at some point in the future.

Anyway, I don't mean to come across as a pr1ck and overly argumentative about the "pitch" thing. It's just something that gets under my skin, and I have to just "get off my chest".

I actually care about Wolfpack soccer. I've been following the team for the past 2-3 years, and have gone to about 4 or 5 games over the last few years. If they show promise this year, I'm planning on going to a few games.

Since Mr Dail has joined The Church Triumphant several years ago and I think Mrs. Dale, if she has not joined her husband, is more interested in animals than sports
