I get what you are saying with regards to the number of decisions a baseball coach has to make, but I disagree some because I don't think all those decisions fall on one guy and more than any other sport. Like, surely we aren't saying that Avent is calling pitches, right? Ultimately, he's the guy in charge, so the results of things fall on him, I just don't think i every decision and outcome really comes from his mouth. It's funny, because during the year, when pitching decisions didn't work out, everyone wants to fire Chrysler, but come post season it's "that loss is squarely on Avent".
Ultimately, despite what some think, I'm not against criticizing the coaches. They make the money and the decisions, and so they are going to get scrutiny. The thing I don't like is that we uber analyze every tiny thing that goes wrong, and rarely ever do the same for all the myriad of things that go right. Some of that is just the nature of the beast, I've been around and been a fan long enough to understand that. When a group has done so much right to get to that position, I just think they deserve more credit than criticism.
So yes, I think this might be the staff's best job to date. Given all the adversity, given the difficulty of the schedule, given the flaws of this team, it really was a magical coaching job to get to Omaha. I personally put making Omaha on par with a Final Four in basketball. I know there are eight teams, but given the number of games you have to play to get there, it just feels like a similar accomplishment. The coaches pushed the right buttons, and the players stepped up big time. Good teams are better than the sum of their parts, and this team was assuredly that. So kudos to all involved.
