A Great Evening At Doak

June 2, 2024
7,087

The action on the field did its part. NC State and South Carolina played a competitive and highly invested game befitting both the spirit of postseason play and the convergence of major conference talent.

With its top third of the batting order becoming as dependable as the sunrise, the Wolfpack grinded out a, 6-4, win that moves them to Sunday’s regional final. NC State will face the winner of James Madison and South Carolina’s noon matchup needing one win in a possible two games to advance to the Super Regional for the second time in four seasons.

With its homers, clutch pitching, quirky plays, and what was at stake, the game was bound to excite its spectators.

But it was the patrons themselves who helped tell the tale for Saturday’s event.

The crowd at Doak Field was fabulous. The stands were filled with people who were highly invested in the action on the field. If the game waned, the fans generated enthusiasm to spur their favorite team.

Getting caught up in the action leaves little time for nostalgia but afterward, there was a fleeting moment between NC State’s win and the turning of the page to what was at stake Sunday where it was hard not to consider where the program had been and where it is going – especially in consideration of its facilities.

Doak is not where people want it to be, nor where it needs to be, but Saturday it was at one of its better moments. The potential is easier to grasp.

A special and meaningful baseball game was played. Raleigh was ready, NC State facilities was ready, and Doak Field was ready. As such, the night became memorable.

With all due respect to the cities of Wilson and Kinston, the days of NC State asking someone else to handle its baseball business are long gone.

The best way to live life is to have excitement at the moment and hope for an even better tomorrow. If NCSU continues to invest in itself as it pertains to baseball, that is exactly the type of life it will be living.

NC State baseball was special Saturday night. The next step is to turn special into normal, and the path to that point is becoming clearer. It is doable and the Wolfpack is not far away.

Elliott Avent was undoubtedly proud to be a part of it. Perhaps in a small way, Ray Tanner was too. A lot of blood and sweat got NC State where it is. Those efforts certainly matter.

The time is now. We must expand Doak Field and make it the showplace it should be. We need a lot more seats, concessions and hospitality zones. The press box needs to be removed and elevated above its current location to allow more seats in the space behind home plate.

Doak seats 2,200 in chairback seats, UNC seats 4,100.

We can and must do better.

100% Agree on tearing down the current press box, and building a new grandstand, with more seating and a roof covering it. The current grandstand looks like that for a high school stadium. I can't understand how this has not been included in the current improvements yet…with ~$15-20 million raised. There's more than enough money there to get this done. IMO this is by far the most needed improvement, with a far bigger impact than putting artificial turf on the field and moving the bull pins. The current grandstand is embarrassing for our program.

College baseball is the greatest of all college sports and it's really not even arguable. Every other school seems to have recognized that building a facility that can welcome 5-6,000 to campus on a beautiful spring day is not only good for the university, it's financially rewarding. I'm really hoping we do something substantial with this next phase and the added money we raised.

Edit: as Guerrilla said, the press box has to go. Besides it being a piece of **** (thanks Lee Fowler), having only 6-8 rows directly behind home plate is ridiculous.

Thats awesome that we have three people on here in for naming level donations to the Doak for these renovations they expect! Who else is in besides 843, Nairo, and GP?

A renovated press box would be excellent. Name it after Bruce Winkworth.

Been a season ticket holder for years. My knees still hit the seat in front of me! No real rennovation has been done, nor is it planned for this next round. I just hope the plans leave room for a seating rennovation in the future. I may not live long enough to see it.

The first phase of renovations was completed before last season. Idk what the hold-ups were for this past offseason, but the next phase should commence this offseason. Also, the UNC Board of Governors approved an additional $5mil for the renovations, so that should help tremendously.

I hope they are planning on adding some more restrooms too. There were lines out booth doors of the men's restroom all weekend long. I know this only happens when you have a packed house, but shouldn't you engineer and plan for that?

It is time for Doak to get the attention it needs. If anything the baseball program has been a staple in the top 15 for the past decade or so. No doubt the program is most deserving of facility improvements...

Not sure if you have heard but there's a $20M renovation going on. Phase 1 was completed before last season which included new seats, LED lights, video board and a new field and bullpens. Phase 2 will start now that the season at the Doak is over and that will be:

-Locker room
-Team lounge, nutrition and sports medicine
-Weight room
-Batting facility
-Pitching lab

I thought we were starting Phase 2 after last season.

There was a delay, I believe related to environmental issues (it's been talked about here a few times over the season, but I may be misremembering). Avent said in an interview before the season that the pitching lab and player amenities would be pushed back till after this season.

That's great too, but we really need to do something with the press box and a cover over it like others have said, I was standing in line at the bathroom and SC fans were like we have high school ballparks bigger than this in our area, that part was a little embarrassing, luckily they were embarrassed on the field by the Pack!

I lived in Columbia for several years and don't recall any high school field bigger than ours.

They were likely full of it, but I mean compared to their stadium, ours is VERY small.....I also wanted to make sure I said stadium bc our field guys did an amazing job all weekend, that field itself looked TOP NOTCH

Unless something has change an overhang is not going to happen. Neither is a major addition in seating. There will be premium fan areas added where the old bull pens were located and concourse upgrades.

What can't we get an overhang? Also, I would think additional seating down the left field line would be nice albeit you eliminate Avents Army hill.

I think some seating was planned for Avents Army and where the visiting BP was
