Jacob Cozart: "We're in the Best State Possible for Baseball"

January 26, 2024

No. 13 NC State catcher Jacob Cozart met with the media Friday afternoon to discuss the Wolfpack's upcoming 2024 season.

The 2023 Second Team All-ACC honoree returns for his junior season after batting .301, hitting 10 home runs, driving in 42 runs, and slugging .546 a season ago. Cozart enters the 2024 campaign as a Preseason All-American, according to Perfect Game.

“Everyone’s really excited. We’ve got a good group of guys this year. People love each other and love playing with each other. We’re going to take it one day at a time getting it going, knowing what’s coming this season. We’re really excited.”

“This team knows what our goal is as one team. We’re going to play for each other. We’re going to play for Coach [Elliott] Avent and play for our coaches. We’re going to respect one another and do everything we can to get better every single day.”

“My focus this year is playing for the team, doing what I can to be a leader for the team, helping us get better every single day, taking it one day at a time, and enjoying every moment of it.”

“It’s huge. We’re talented as a young staff, and we’ve got the same old guys who are very, very talented. They’re even better this year. With that mix right there, that’s all we can ask for.”

“It’s been everything and more, playing for Coach Avent. I don’t know a coach who cares for his players more than Coach Avent. I know he’s been there for me through all the ups and downs. He pushes me more than I can ask which is what I want. As a coach, he pushes me to be the best player, and off the field, he pushes me to be the best person I can be.”

“Everyone had the same mindset when they came in. They knew this is a winning program. We had 20 new guys come in, but it was right away where we started clicking as a team. We started doing stuff as a team. We love one another. We have the same ambitions together.”

“NIL is a great thing because it’s not just pay-to-play like some people think. It’s helping kids be able to go to college and play baseball instead of having to pay thousands and thousands of dollars. With that here, this program is built on character. We’re built on our work ethic. This team will be able to compete with anyone because of how hard we play for one another and how much we love each other.”

“I’m aware of it, but at the same time, my dad and Coach Avent have preached to me, ‘Just live in the moment.’ That means to me just doing what I can to help this team win. It’s not in my hands; what happens is in God’s hands. I”m a man of faith. Going forward, I’m going to do what I can to help this team win.”

“Out of the bullpen, Shane Van Dam is going to be really good. He’s a new guy that transferred in. Cam Wimbish is going to be a freshman [as is] Jacob Dudan. Honestly, everybody that’s going to be coming out of the pen has a chance to be really, really good.”

“I’m really excited. I’ve never been anywhere further than Texas. [Hawaii] is a whole new area for me to go to. I’m going to go enjoy it with my teammates. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

“Obviously, my freshman year came after the Omaha year which we know how hard it was for people to swallow, and we had that publicity. This team, we’re doing a really good job on focusing on what we can control, not focusing on what the outside media says or all the buzz surrounding our team. That stuff is oblivious to us; we just focus on what we can do to get better every single day.”

“It’s what we want to face. We want to face the best of the best. There’s no other way to do it. When we decided to come to school, we knew we would play in a Power Five conference, playing against nationally-ranked teams basically every single week. It’s exciting. It’s fun.”

“You mention those schools. There’s actually 18 D-I baseball programs in North Carolina. We’re in the best state possible for baseball. Everyone is really good. They all have talent. That’s the fun of college baseball now. Everyone has talent. That’s the way the game is now. There’s no game we’re going to look past. We’re going to take it one game at a time going through the season and just do what we can to control what we can do.”

Garrett [Pennington] has been awesome. He came in and solidified himself as one of the team leaders, not just by how he acts but the way he is as a teammate, as a character, as a person. The way he handles himself, he’s selfless. He just wants to do anything he can to help this team get better. He’s honestly been beyond what I thought he’d be.”

“He had the team over to watch a football game one time, and that was the best brisket I've ever had. I’ve been to a bunch of barbecue places in North Carolina, but you couldn’t beat that.”

“Of course there is, but it was one step up from what we did the year before. Freshman year, we got robbed. Everyone knows it. Going into last year, we had the same aspirations. We got to the Regional, had a heartbreaking loss against South Carolina, and then the season ended. It left a sour taste in my mouth. That’s why I want to redeem myself and get to our end goal this year."

Should be a really fun season. Feel much better about the arms we have this year. I also think we will be much better defensively.

This team has more pitching options than just about any team we have had in recent memory. Gonna be a fun ride this season!!!

Impressive guy. Avent is a wonderful and perfect coach for this program, and all you need to do is listen to his players to realize it. They won't win them all, and them will the "fire Avent" over-reactions to some loss or other, but this guy is the embodiment of why this team has a chance this year and every year that Elliott continues to coach here.

Baseball is becoming much more analytical especially with pitching (as seen with Wake being the poster child) that at some point we are going to need to get younger and more innovative with our staff. We are late to the game with the pitching lab now. Also, it's one thing to have a lab, but you also have to have the expertise to use it.

Get younger? Clint and BoRob are 49 and Hart is 45. Once Elliott retires and Hart takes over we'll have gotten much younger. haha

We have a 26ish year old Director of Analytics and Technology. Our new Director of Player and Program Development is 25. Other than the head coach who totally let's his coaches do their thing, we're not exactly old. ha

We're getting a pitching lab. We're going to have someone qualified to run it, why would we think otherwise? Strange.

I'd argue that Vandy is the poster child as they've had their lab several years before Wake and have been pumping out big league arms for years. Credit to Wake for getting ahead of technology. If only the athletic department at State would've put money into our program between 2014 and 2019 (Vandy got theirs sometime around '14 and Wake theirs in '19 IIRC).

I'm not gonna lie, the stretch from 2014-2019 was bad and I thought it was time for Avent to go.

2014: Missing the Tournament
2015: TCU debacle
2016: Coastal Carolina debacle
2017: Kentucky debacle
2018: Raleigh region debacle
2019: ECU region debacle

However, he's responded and would've been a CWS contender in 2020, should have a National Championship in 2021, Completely screwed by the NCAA in 2022 and had a decent team in 2023.

I'm excited for 2024 and the team he's put together and think this could be a fun year.

2014: got screwed out of the tournament by that awful call against Trea Turner
2015: This one's on the players, I mean it's not like he could've fielded a couple ground balls for them to get the first out or end the inning. passed balls, balks. Players.
2016: Not sure if you're talking ejection or the weather but we win that game if the umps suspend that game earlier instead of waiting for it to be impossible to pitch.
2017: what debacle? Losing to the 1 seed as a 3 seed? Not sure I follow.
2018: yeah not great but still won over 40 games with a successful season. I get it tho.
2019: might be over using the word "debacle" on this one. I can't believe that team didn't get to host over unc and having to go to Greenville was awful. What am I not remembering about that?

I get where you're coming from tho, for sure. Dude coached his ass off some of those years even though he didn't have any support.

2014: got screwed out of the tournament by that awful call against Trea Turner 100% agree
2015: This one's on the players, I mean it's not like he could've fielded a couple ground balls for them to get the first out or end the inning. passed balls, balks. Players. Players cost us this one, but at the time I remember feeling differently about how that game was managed. Truthfully, it's been a LONG time so I may be misremembering.
2016: Not sure if you're talking ejection or the weather but we win that game if the umps suspend that game earlier instead of waiting for it to be impossible to pitch. Misuse of the word "debacle"
2017: what debacle? Losing to the 1 seed as a 3 seed? Not sure I follow. Beating them early to have the "what if game" available, having the lead in both games and not being able to finish. Again, not a debacle like originally posted.
2018: yeah not great but still won over 40 games with a successful season. I get it tho.
2019: might be over using the word "debacle" on this one. I can't believe that team didn't get to host over unc and having to go to Greenville was awful. What am I not remembering about that? Losing the opener as the 2 seed, then losing to ECU for "2 and que" hurt after not hosting.

I get where you're coming from tho, for sure. Dude coached his ass off some of those years even though he didn't have any support.
Maybe I just liked using the word "debacle"? hahaha. I clarified some of these in bold next to your comments.

I was trying to use the word as a catch all, fully understanding each event wasn't fully on Avent's shoulders, but I failed miserably. Ultimately, as they stacked on each other, it became frustrating and at the time I felt it was maybe time to move on. I can admit I was wrong though, and have been impressed with Avent and Hart.

Nah brother, I 100% get it.
The UK series we just ran out of arms like we usually did/do, IMO. That UK team was stacked with pitching that year. I remember sitting up in Black Mountain at my wife's aunts house outside on the porch b/c I couldn't get signal inside to watch a couple of those games. I was scared a damn bear was gonna eat me up (they live up in the mtns amongst the bears haha).

The ECU regional was just a kick in the balls especially with unc getting to host and us getting stuck with two "rivals" that wanted to beat the sht out of us.

Look, ultimately the players shtting the bed is on Elliott we all know that but some guys doing uncharacteristic things is tough to pin down on him, IMO. Willard moving over to 2nd helped clean up his defense until that fateful inning against TCU. haha

I don't think it's a coincidence that our recruiting started to turn around once Hart took over as the 'crootin coordinator and same goes for the success we've had since he's been the associate HC as well (2014, IIRC).

Definitely in good hands.
