Crazy how there are only 4 home duals this season, and that they will be competing from November through January all away from home, with the first home dual not being until February 2nd versus unc. But there's another dual at Duke and the ACC tournament is being hosted at unc-CHeat, so that's a total of 6 chances to see them in person within close driving distance for those living near the triangle.

Nice to see the wrestling coverage picking up on IPS.

If you've never been to Reynolds to watch a match, you're missing out.

Its great to see wrestling being covered on IPS. You're missing out if you haven't been to a dual in Reynolds yet. Coach Pop has done an excellent job with the program.

This year's team should be really good. Even by our standards. VT looks really good on paper as well. That will be a fun match again this year.

No doubt, especially the duals against unc-CHeat and Virginia Tech. The very first Wolfpack wrestling match I watched (whether on TV or in person) was the dual in Reynolds against unc in February 2020 that I attended in person, which we won in thrilling fashion, coming down to the last weight class match of the evening. That match set the home attendance record for an NC State wrestling match (4,383 per GoPack), which still stands as the record. I only got the "notion" to go to the match because we were nationally ranked #3 at the time and unc was #8, so the match was being hyped up on social media and message boards, etc due to it being a rare match with both schools in the top 10. Then, I went to the home match against Virginia Tech (ranked #7 at time) a week later, which was another awesome atmosphere/crowd and thrilling and narrow victory (21-18).

It's funny how you can be an alumnus and college fan and go decades without even thinking about many of the "non-revenue" sports. For almost 20 years after first attending NC State, I almost completely ignored all Wolfpack sports except for football and men's basketball (and a very little bit of women's basketball and baseball). That all changed around 2018, when I first started following NC State club ice hockey, and then in 2020 with wrestling and women's and men's tennis, women's cross country & track in 2021, and the volleyball team and even club rugby last year. Now, it's totally flipped and I largely ignore football and men's basketball and my favorite Wolfpack sports are all of these "non-revenue" sports, even the club sports.

I went to the men's club rugby match against unc-CH about a month ago over at Hooker fields on the unc-CH campus, for example. There were only around 150 fans in attendance, but it was something I'll never forget. We destroyed them by a score of about 30-7. One of the most amazing things I've seen as an NC State fan was last season's "Frozen Finley" game in Carter-Finley where the NC State club ice hockey team beat unc in front of ~25,000 fans. And right next to that was seeing in person the Wolfpack women's tennis team destroy #1 nationally ranked unc at Cary Tennis Park this past April to win their very first ACC championship. Also right up there is being in Reynolds just two weeks ago to see the volleyball team beat #5 Louisville for their first top 5 win in program history. I'm planning on driving up to Charlottesville next month for the cross country national championship, and if the women's team can pull off the 3-peat, that may top anything I've seen in person as an NC State fan. I drove to Charlottesville last October to see them win the ACC Championship.

So including attending the wrestling ACC tournament championship in Reynolds last March, I've personally attended 3 Wolfpack ACC Championships (wrestling, women's tennis, women's XC) over just the last year. I mention all that just to make the point that these memories from just the last few years in the non-revenue sports far exceed the highlights, for me personally, in the revenue sports over the previous ~20 years.

I'm more into the non-revenue sports as well. I've had season tickets for football for a long time but wrestling is by far the sport I look forward to the most.

I was going to the matches back when only a couple hundred people showed up. I didn't think I would ever see wrestling get to the level it is now at NC State.

This has been mentioned by many others here, but I think the renovation to Reynolds has played a very big role in the recent success of the wrestling and women's basketball programs, and now being seen with the volleyball program also. Of course having great coaches in those sports is extremely important as well. This renovation has no doubt lead to increased attendance at these events, and snowballed to elevated recruiting and performance of our teams at the home competitions in Reynolds, leading to improvements in the programs as a whole.

If you look at the NC State wrestling Instagram page, they have a "Wrestler Spotlight" feature they've been doing recently with posts on many of the athletes with a few questions, and almost every wrestler mentions that their "favorite thing about competing at NC State" is the atmosphere in Reynolds. And Pop mentioned in the press interview from yesterday that one of the selling points to recruits is our crowds at Reynolds, because recruits want to wrestle in front of big crowds in college. On the volleyball Instagram page, their latest post is a video of them on campus promoting the match tomorrow against #7 Pitt, and one of the assistant coaches mentions that the home crowd in Reynolds is one of the big "reasons" that they have a current 9 game home winning streak and just recently beat #5 Louisville.

Reynolds has to be one of the best venues in the country that is used for women's basketball, wrestling, and volleyball (and gymnastics as well) --- combined. Of course, there are a few venues at other schools that are better for each of those sports individually. But as a venue for all of these sports, Reynolds is special. If you haven't been to Reynolds since the renovation, you need to see it. The "Hall of Fame" and lobby at the northern end of the building is beautiful.

You stated in your intro that Hidlay looks to defend his title at 184, but isn't he moving up to 197 this season?

Does anyone have the projected lineup for this season? Who is moving besides Hidlay?
GuerrillaPack

Of course this isn't "official", but from what I've gathered this is the likely line-up. Hidlay is moving to 197, and Trumble is supposedly red-shirting. I haven't seen anything mentioned about 184, but I assume that Fishback would be the likely starter. Singleton may also apparently be red-shirting, but not certain on that. I think he posted on social media that we "may not see much of him on the mat" this season. Once he returns or long term, I think Singleton is supposed to wrestle at 174, because it's too hard for him to cut to 165.

125 Comacho and Trombley
133 Orine
141 Jack
149 Arrington
157 Scott
165 ??
174 Faison
184 Fishback
197 Hidlay
285 Trephan

Hidlay is definitely moving up. I loaded the video, did not write the intro, so that will have to be altered.

EDIT: I touched it up a little to be more accurate.

There are only so many hours in the day, and so many days in the week, but the plan is to do more with wrestling. I've been committed to doing more with these sports, including traveling to games, so we are doing better.

Wrestling deserves a beat writer. They've done their bit, so it is time we do ours.
