UNCW Transfer Brett Banks: "Both Would Be Great Choices"
UNC Wilmington transfer pitcher Brett Banks had a breakout season for the Seahawks. Operating as the team’s closer, he struck out 44 in 38.1 innings while recording eight saves.
With one year of eligibility remaining he entered the transfer portal, and the Garner (NC) native quickly selected NC State.
He recently spoke with Inside Pack Sports about his situation heading into the MLB Draft.
Why NC State?
I grew up a State fan. It’s been in my family my whole life. We had tickets to all sports really, and I grew up going to all the games. So being the life-long fan and entering the portal, I knew State would have leverage because of all that.
Just being able to play in front of my family, too, was big. Wilmington isn’t far, but I’m from Garner, so having my family, grandparents being able to watch me... that would be pretty cool.
What was it like in the portal?
I heard from teams all over the country and spoke to other schools, but I think State reached out a few days after and I visited. It’s 10 minutes down the road, so I was able to take a quick visit and meet up with coach Chrysler.
I was hearing from schools in the SEC and ACC, and I knew that was the league I wanted to transfer to... one of those two leagues.
How did NC State react when you committed?
They were really excited and I know my family was really excited as well.
You were the closer at UNC Wilmington but have been a starter. Did NC State discuss a potential role?
I told coach Chrysler I’d be open to anything. With how things worked out this season we had a pretty good starting rotation. I had a velo jump, and we just thought my arm was strong and I could handle multiple outings out the bullpen.
I enjoyed it a lot, the closing role, and if that were the case I’d love to be able to do that for State.
How do you feel with the draft about to start?
I feel confident my name will get called. It’s just a matter of where and when. I do think I’ll get selected at some point, I’d say probably day two, maybe day three.
How tough is that decision going to be, attending NC State or the draft?
It’s tough because both would be great choices. It’s going to depend where and whatever amount is being discussed.
Are you enrolled?
Yes, I actually did start summer courses to get ahead on the Master’s program, and I’ve been throwing with the team.
What will it be like to hear your name called this week?
It’s going to be a pretty surreal moment. I’ve had a harder path than most players, and I know that it’s obviously one stepping stone. I want to play in the big leagues and the draft is the first step. I’m really excited, but we’ll see how it goes.
