It really is happening almost everywhere, at places you wouldn't think it could/would happen.

Interesting to me how Tommy White could only DH for us, but he goes to LSU and is playing 3rd base in Omaha with a good shot at playing for a National Championship. I haven't watched him all year, but he's looked pretty solid over there in the CWS.

He's fielding .855 which is abysmal. He also didn't only DH for us, he played 3rd and 1st base until he got injured. He's looked decent at 3rd this week on balls hit right to him. The go-ahead RBI from WFU the other night probably would've been knocked down in the infield by a better defensive 3rd baseman.

White would've continued to play mediocre (this is the correct usage of this word, btw) third base for us had he not been injured diving for a ball (which he had a similar injury this year diving into a base). We couldn't risk him getting hurt in the field and losing his bat. I'm sure he'd have been back out there at third this year had he not left. Regardless of what his people said, him leaving didn't have **** to do with playing third.

I don't disagree at all...just find it interesting that he seems to be playing the position well in the spotlight of the CWS. On a related note, I heard from someone with close ties to the baseball program that he didn't even give us a chance to put a NIL package together to counter any offer he might get. Apparently, he decided early on he was going to cash in on his stardom and he wasn't planning to stay in Raleigh after that. But hey, that is just what I heard.

Except he's not playing the position well. Like Alex said his fielding percentage is .855. That's terrible. He was at .934 here which was still below average. His bat of course is good just like it was here but let's not act like he turned into a decent fielder just because LSU is in the CWS. He actually got worse. LSU is just able to overcome that because their roster is loaded with both the SEC Player and Pitcher of the Year and a stacked bullpen.

A decent 3rd baseman at least attempts to make a play on this ball. His reaction is so late the ball is already by him when he's taking his first step. That was the game winning run for Wake.

Perhaps a great 3rd baseman makes a play on that ball, but I've played 1st base and I know from experience that sometimes you know as soon as the ball comes off the bat whether you are going to be able to make a play. Plus there was a runner on 2nd, and you have to think about covering 3rd if the SS is able to make a play on the ball. I don't think it is as simple as saying he should have dived. Regardless, he has handled balls hit to him...and he has a heck of an arm.

No, he needs to knock that ball down (or the SS, both need to dive) to keep the run from scoring. Best case scenario there is runners on 1st and 3rd instead of the winning run scoring.

He also didn't cover 3rd, not his responsibility. He is the cutoff man there in that situation as the SS should move over the cover 3rd.

"Heck of an arm" is a bit of hyperbole. He has a good enough arm and the two scouts I talked to last year called his arm strength "just ok" but it didn't matter b/c in their words, he's a first baseman/DH as a pro.

Kid is one of the most complete and best hitters I've ever seen with no holes in his swing. He's cut down on the swing and miss this year but could stand to walk more but his ability to hit stuff on the outer half makes him a bit of a unicorn at this stage. His backside power is legit.

He's awful defensively though. No way to put any lipstick on that pig.

Regardless, the kid didn't want to be here and nothing we could've done was going to change that.

Sure. Fact is Tommy White is not good in the field. There's literally no debating that. He was well below average at State last year plus he got hurt playing the field and has been downright terrible at 3rd for LSU. His fielding percentage this year would have been last in the ACC out of all players and the next closest would have been .913 so last by a wide margin. I can't find individual SEC fielding percentage for the whole conference but have to imagine if it is that bad comparatively in the ACC it would have been last in the SEC as well. His bat is electric and that's what keeps him in the lineup. No need to pretend otherwise or that Avent and the staff were wrong for not playing him at 3rd more (which he did and then got hurt so they moved him back to DH) or if they did he would have stayed around.

Not if they're paying attention.

He's a better hitting version of Jacob Berry who was picked 6th overall by the Marlins last year.

100% agree. I typed and deleted it because you beat me to it. The coach says something like "on your bellies, infield" with two outs and a runner on second in the 8th. You have to block the ball at least in that situation. Tommy just sort of got out of there. He didn't make an error on that play, did he? But he can really hit. He is at best okay at 3rd. He has to dive and make some sort of effort even if he can't touch the ball. He is taught to get as much to his left with no one on. Why would he go to his right and hope the SS gets the ball in that situation? Again, he has to dive. Show us he can't get there.

He's making the plays he's supposed to, nothing has been above and beyond normal play at 3rd. Haha You want to reward him for just playing the position? Ha

You're also seeing his lack of arm strength as well.

But good for Tommy for just making routine plays.

White's fielding percentage is a hundred points lower than Green and we wanted to bench Green completely. Maybe he's making plays in the CWS, I dunno haven't been watching, but by the statistics, he's not good in the field.

Using Tommy White's defense as some type of "gotcha" moment as a slight against the Wolfpack doesn't quite hit as I suppose it was meant to.

He hasn't had to move to his left or right once lol. Ernest Ross made 4 3's this year, doesn't make him a good shooter.

just signed up..came on here to say that I was chatting with Peebles Dad (did not know who he was before this) at the Coastal Carolina game about White's portal transfer and Peebles Sr said he didn't think too highly of the portal ??

Tennessee is another type of team that can overcome less than perferct defense.

Unfortunately for Cannon (and his dad) if he wants to squat everyday, the portal was his only option for the most part, for another year. Good for him landing where he did.
