Payton Green Enters Transfer Portal

NC State infielder Payton Green will enter the transfer portal after two seasons with the Wolfpack, according to D1Baseball.

Drafted in the 15th round by the Boston Red Sox in the 2021 MLB Draft, the Cary, N.C. native came to Raleigh at the eighth-best prospect out of the state of North Carolina, according to Perfect Game. Green finished his freshman season with a .256 average, seven home runs, 39 runs batted in, and 10 stolen bases.

This season, Green ended the year with a .274 average, 10 home runs, 45 RBI, and nine steals. However, his numbers took a decline after his final game at shortstop on April 9 versus Wake Forest, finishing the 2023 campaign as the everyday second baseman. Green had 18 hits in 81 at-bats after moving across the middle infield with a .222 average, two homers, and 12 RBI.

The Wolfpack has seven infielders available on the roster that can return for next year, three of whom are draft-eligible in July. NC State also has five shortstops committed to play next year out of high school.

That's probably good for him and the team. Too many costly errors and one of the lower batting averages.

He needs a fresh start somewhere else.

My opinion - Lineup perspective. Start with Cozart, Serrano, Peebles, Soles, Harrison, Nixon. Build it out from there. That nucleus would mean hunting a SS/2B, CF, and 1B/Corner Outfielder in the transfer portal. In theory we should be an intriguing place for transfer shortstops and center fielders.

SS and CF at NC State should be an attractive destination for transfers (portal or JUCO) if we can cobble together a decent NIL. SS in particular.

Hell, add 3B to the list as well.

I saw a former player question his effort level on Twitter during the regional. I won't go that far, but with the portal stuff starting before the season is over, guys being checked out isn't surprising. I think he has the physical tools to be a really good player, I've always thought his issues were between the ears. Last season I theorized his defensive issues came from having the yips throwing the ball, which caused him to rush and be out of sync - no confirmation of that, just my thought. He seemed better this year, but once things started to happen negative, they snowballed. Once he was moved out of SS again his departure was a forgone conclusion IMO. Wish him the best,

Not having a legit first baseman last year hurt him as well. He made several throws that any competent first baseman would handle but Thomas White/Gino couldn't snag.

When I asked folks in and around the program who would take off for NC State in 2023, several different names were mentioned but all said Payton Green was one to watch. I wish him the best and thank him for his time.

I think we need a stud RF with an arm. We haven't had that lately. Can't play with 3 LF. Have to be better. Add team speed and defensive SS. With a defensive SS you could live with an average 3B or even a C moved to utilize his great bat a la Peebles. Harrison can play SS but I think needs to play 2B. Power bats on the corners. Cozart, Serrano, Peebles and Nixon in LF. That means 3 guys plus ARMs. Maybe 3 or 4 arms depending on who leaves and health.
