BASEBALL: What did we learn in non-conference play?

NC State is 13-0 to start the season but how much can you glean from what we’ve seen so far? Let’s talk about it.

Offense

There’s a million different numbers that will show you how dominant State’s offense has been so far:

The biggest surprise has been Kalae Harrison. He did not hit well at Texas A&M for two years, but so far he’s hitting .417/.522/.630 with a home run and a silly 9/3 BB/K ratio.

I figured Payton Green would break out this year, but what we’ve seen so far has exceeded any possible expectations. The shortstop tradition at NC State continues.

There was a question of who would be the odd man out in the lineup, and that appears to be Dom Pilolli. Now how do you get enough at-bats for guys like Cannon Peebles, Will Marcy, and Eli Serrano?

Pitching

Sam Highfill looks great. He gave up a couple of homers Sunday vs NJIT but I am not concerned. He’s missing bats and has added velocity, as he’s up to 94 on the stadium radar gun. He’s building up his workload, and I expect to see him in the weekend rotation in the next week or two.

How about Dominic Fritton? Talk about a tantalizing talent, and the numbers so far back up the raw stuff. That’s a guy who can stick in the rotation this year and will make it a tough decision when Highfill is ready to start:

The returning veterans have been as expected: Willadsen, Whitaker, Lawson. I don’t like the bullpen usage so far: too much Lawson, not enough everybody else. In June you can get by with five or six arms, but it’s March. You need another 2-3 guys getting outs for you so you aren’t running your studs into the ground.

Clean baseball

Watching this team compared to last year is like night and day defensively. Anytime a ball was hit to the outfield last year you were holding your breath, even on routine fly balls. This year? Parker Nolan is spectacular in center, and Trevor Candelaria and Carter Trice are solid in the corners.

Gino Groover and Payton Green have held up their end of the bargain on the left side of the infield. Fielding percentage doesn’t tell you how good a team is defensively, but it tells you if they are clean. The Pack’s .982 fielding percentage checks that box.

Looking at the staff, they are throwing strikes which is a huge part of clean baseball. 1.7 BB/9 innings, that will play. You aren’t seeing many (any?) baserunning mistakes. This is my biggest takeaway so far because competition doesn’t matter. Whether you’re playing Wagner and Longwood in March or Vanderbilt and Stanford in Omaha, clean baseball is clean baseball.

What does it all mean?

State couldn’t look any better. I’m big on margin of victory and State is winning by an average of over eight runs per game and has only played three “close” games. That’s impressive, even against bad competition.

The concern heading to Miami is that it’s going to be a huge step up in competition and you don’t know how new guys will respond to ACC pitching. How will Peebles, Serrano, and Harrison hit against better pitching? You’d like to have a better idea.

Here’s what I said coming into the year: I would not project this team to be heavily in the hosting mix, although that’s primarily due to the schedule giving them very little margin for error. They’ve got to be nearly perfect to get to the top 16, and there’s too many questions around the defense, Highfill’s health, and the bullpen for me to project that.

Well, the Pack has checked all those boxes to this point, and even the schedule has been better than anybody could have realistically expected to this point. I think this team has a very high floor, but how high is the ceiling? The ACC schedule is front loaded, so we will find out how good they can be in the next six weeks.

My concerns are also how will the bats look against ACC competition and the bullpen seems limited.

How high is the ceiling? Same height as the roof!
If you never allow for a little fun and relaxation you will become mentally unstable without knowing it.

Good stuff Ethan, thanks for posting. I too don't really understand why you aren't getting more bullpen arms involved against the crap competition so far. Way too much Lawson as you said. We only pitched 8 pitchers total against NJIT and we won two of those games by a combined score of 30-4. Perfect oppertunity to get other arms involved, don't lean on the guys you know will have heavy innings late etc. Just don't quite get that. Lawson has pitched in 2 games in almost all weekend series so far and sometimes multiple innings. Just don't love the usage so early against the comp. Fritton has looked great, hope he keeps it up.

Bats look great and we have some young guys who will just continue to get better and better. That's what Avent does is get teams who can hit and he has done it once again. Keep it up and lets drive that winning streak to 16-18 games!

I guess I don't understand the "too much" Lawson stuff? He's going to probably be our closer unless Creed Watkins gets the job and I'm not sure I'm ready for all that action just yet. He is throwing more strikes than balls to this point but Lawson is more reliable, IMO. BUT, Lawson can also go long and be used like we did with Villaman two years ago. Either way, Lawson hasn't exactly thrown all that much. 6 appearances but only 11.1 innings and he's hasn't been throwing a ton of pitches either, IMO. If we move Sam back to the weekend rotation then Whitaker or Fritton gives us another arm that can go long when needed.

I mean have we seen too much Highfill? Two less appearances and two less innings but basically the same pitches/inning averaged out. Both Sam and Justin were able to get some high leverage innings as well, which IMO, is beneficial early in the season.

I want to see some younger arms as well but like I said last year I think Clint knows what he's doing. Carson Kelly and Derrick Smith were two guys I'd like to see more of but if the coaches aren't putting them out there, I'm sure there's a reason for it. I'd also like to see more Rio Britton and Shaffner as well.

I agree. Closing 2-3 games a week is what everyone's closer does. Hell, we've played teams this year who have had guys that appeared in almost every game, can't remember the dude but they said he'd thrown in like 8 of their 9 games at that point or something. We also faced a guy that threw 125+ pitches in his previous outing, this early in the year.

I agree with all this. 11 innings is nothing, especially given that he's a major reason we are undefeated which sets us up to play for a hosting slot.

I think it was the kid for NJIT and he lead the country in appearances at the time. Rapp for UNC had 42 appearances and 45 innings thrown last year. Justice threw 60 innings in 21, Villaman 55 last year. I think you ride with your best guys especially in high leverage situations with multiple days off leading to a weekend.

I also think we might have something in Shaffner. I was very impressed with him at UNCG.

Yeah 2-3 times per week in the heat of conference play. Not against NJIT, Radford and UNCG. That's how you end up with guys out of gas in regionals. I don't have the same gripe with Highfill because they're stretching him out to start it appears

He's thrown 11 innings in 4 weeks. Is he not supposed to pitch until conference play?

11.1 innings Ethan...27 pitches/appearance. I threw more strenuous bullpen sessions in HS.

Our early season schedule is like the movie The Ringer. We play a bunch of nothing schools that are less challenging than a team scrimmage, and then use the first three ACC series to figure things out… except unlike the ringer, we never get the girl in the end.

When have we had guys out of gas in the regionals? Two years ago we had five guys pitch pretty much all of our innings and made it to the CWS with plenty of gas.

Just wait till Wiladsen throws 100+ pitches tomorrow. Ethan is always super conservative about usage.

I think Logan and Baker ran out of gas last year but that's related to their injuries and not having pitched for an extended amount of time.

And neither of those is the scenario he's talking about.

Yeah I definitely have. Think getting innings from your depth is important early in the year so you can lean on your top arms a lot late, as they did in 21. Didn't realize Lawson only had 11 innings, recency bias I suppose
