Officiating isn’t easy, but when referees are impacting the outcomes of games, it becomes a problem.
In NC State’s loss at Syracuse, the numbers and impact one specific official, Bert Smith, had was notable.
Official | 1st Half NC State | 1st Half Syracuse | 2nd Half NC State | 2nd Half Syracuse | Total Fouls |
Bert Smith | 6 | 1 | 7 (3 under 2 minutes) | 1 (1 under 2 minutes) | 13 State, 2 Syracuse |
AJ Desai | 2 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 3 State, 5 Syracuse |
Bill Covington | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 4 State, 4 Syracuse |
Notables
- Syracuse went almost 20 minutes of game action without committing a foul. Last foul call of first half was 12:34 (ignoring the intentional foul right before halftime). First foul of second half was 13:47.
- Bert Smith called 13 of 20 fouls on NC State. He called 2 of 11 fouls on Syracuse.
- Bert Smith overturned a deflection call by AJ Desai that was clear and obvious.
In this edition of the IPS Film Room we’ll look at the majority of fouls called, as well as multiple non-calls on the offensive and defensive end of the game to give you an idea of the impact.
