SMITH: “We’re a great team, we're gelling”

NC State guard Terquavion Smith met with the media following the Wolfpack's 74-63 win over Elon on Saturday.

On what was going well…

We did OK on the offensive end. I feel like we’ve got to do better on defense as a team, staying locked in, staying together in crunch time. But it was good on the offensive end.

On what Kevin Keatts told the team in the huddle down the stretch…

Just to lock in, stay the course and stay together. Know there’s time to score always in that situation.

On if the win was closer than expected…

It was a good game, good team. If you look around the country, there’s a lot of upsets going on so we’re just lucky to get the win.

On facing Elon’s zone…

To see that zone was good for us so we know what we need to work on now. So it was good for us to see that zone and see how they played it.

On how they managed to get inside against the zone…

We preached on getting into the middle. When you get to the middle of the zone, it opens up everything else. So getting to the middle is the main goal.

On what he learned about the team today…

That we’re gonna fight through adversity. That we all play together. We’re a great team, we’re gelling.

On how Elon was able to score in the paint so easily…

We were lackadaisical on defense. All of us, including myself. I feel like we’ve got to lock in more on the defensive end in the late game. In the beginning of the game our pressure is there the majority of the game, so we’ve just got to lock in more in late game.
