Selfishly speaking I hope she continues with her college career, and at the very least continues to train under Laurie Henes who has done a masterful job with her training and development.
As someone who probably knows a lot more about running than me, what is your opinion on if/when she would need to "break away" from the NC State training in order to make the 2024 Olympic team? Like does she need to go train somewhere at altitude, like in Flagstaff Arizona? Or could she stay in Raleigh and train under Henes? From all I've read/watched about Katelyn, it seems that making the Olympic team is her big goal that could be the big factor that may cause her to turn pro and leave NC State early. Would she be able to run the fall 2023 cross country season, and then start some sort of "unique" training in preparation for the 2024 U.S. trials some time in the winter or spring of 2024? How many months prior to the U.S. trials does she have to start that "unique" training, if any is needed?
I think if the Olympics was not in the picture, it seems like it makes her much more likely to stay at NC State for virtually all of her eligibility - because it doesn't seem like the financial aspect of turning pro is a big deal to her. She would get much more exposure as a very high profile college athlete breaking records than she would as a new professional (getting beat a lot early in her career). And we know how much she absolutely loves collegiate cross country, and being a part of a team (both of which, cross country and the team aspect, are not the same as a pro).
