Coach H spoke at Raleigh Sports Club this past Wed. Did an excellent job. Really shows his passion for all things NC State.
Younger squad this season. Lost 12 swimmers to graduation and 10 were All American and 4 National Champs
Squad has lead ACC academically for last 2 seasons
Talked about developing swimmers. Program has great reputation with European swimmers looking to make Olympic squad of home country.
Break ground on new outdoor pool next May. Doing outdoor for purely economical reasons. Will have diving platforms
Was against off campus facility based on his experience at Va Tech who has off campus facility. Scheduling and access was problematic.
Started at Univ of the South with bare bones budget and staff with no scholarships. Taught him a lot about relationships.
Only have 9 scholarships for 30 men swimmers; 14 scholarships for 33 women swimmers.
Hard to realize he has been at State for 9 seasons.
What an asset this guy is. He has built a national top 5 program with one pool built in the early 1960s, another built in the 1980's as a recreational pool for the general student body, and no on-campus diving facilities. It is refreshing to hear a coach that embodies the truism that elite talent will be attracted to successful coaches in spite of the physical accouterments of the program.
He brought with him 2-time defending NCAA Champion (200-meter butterfly) Andreas Vazaios, who basically said that--he didn't care about the flashy locker rooms or fancy pools--it was about a coach that would help him reach his goals.
A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.
