I took my dog Duke to Lake Waccamaw today. The water was perfect along with the weather...

I walked a 1/4 mile out into the water. It was knee deep maybe, my dog was going crazy having fun.

My sore toe feels better.

The water was so clear I drank some of it. It was too cool for bacteria.

My dog ran up onto the dock and ran a half mile directly to my car.

Lake Waccamaw is the best hidden secret in NC. The town is super small.

Whiteville is neat too.

Mother's family was from there. Spent many summers at the big house.

Grandaddy had a flat bottom boat with a 10hp mercury.

I'd take my shotgun, fishing pole, casting net, cooler and my dog. We would stay gone all day. I'd go deep into the creeks setting trotline and shooting squirrels out of the trees.

it's about 30 min from my house. I love going there. The state park there is absolutely beautiful.

I don't think it was a state park back then? Maybe we were deep enough in there it didn't matter. Looking back on it. My grandparents would turn me loose with a boat and a 4/10 double barrel shotgun…I was 8, no shirt or shoes just overalls and my dog. A different time.

I'd be gone all day and no one would come looking for me. Had to be back to the big house by sunset. I'd show up with a mess of crappy. We'd dress them and have a fish fry and Jack got all the scraps.

Heard tale of the swamp man that would come out at night and I think there was something to it. You hear strange things near dark and woods can be a scary place at night.

it probably wasnt a state park there then.

as far as fishing goes, I think there are large mouth bass in the lake...I'd love to go a small boat and fish there....deepest point of lake is only 12 feet deep, as clear as that water is you can probably see the fish take the bait

and man I miss a good fish fry lol...last time I did that was Shackleford Banks near Morehead City
