We produce like 99% of the US formula domestically. And the biggest producer shut down its manufacturing.

I guess we don't export much and other countries do their own, or get it from Europe?

Didn't the FDA shut down that producer?

Our government created this mess. We require baby formula to be domestically produced. We have federal contracts in place that severely restrict profits for those who do produce the formula. National Review did a big piece on this two weeks ago. Long and short of it, free markets would have self-corrected long before the Abbott Labs issues surfaced but we don't have free markets due to federal involvement.
Quote:

In a free market, widespread shortages shouldn't occur. The price should rise as supply gets low, which encourages more production. The increased production should prevent a prolonged shortage before it has a chance to get started, then bring the price back down as well.

The overarching problem is that price signals in the baby-formula market don't work well to begin with. A 2010 study from the USDA's Economic Research Service estimated that 57 to 68 percent of all baby formula sold in the U.S. was purchased through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).

WIC is a federally funded program, overseen by the USDA, that is administered by the states. To be eligible for WIC purchases, baby-formula makers bid on contracts with state governments. A 2015 Wall Street Journal story explains:
Quote:

Fierce bidding for those state contracts has led the three biggest formula makers to offer steadily deeper discounts on average 92% below wholesale prices eroding profits on WIC sales. But winning a state's contract makes a formula maker the dominant player on a state's grocery store shelves, where the companies try to make up for their money-losing WIC sales.
"WIC essentially replaces price-sensitive consumers of infant formula with price-insensitive consumers." A 2015 USDA report finds that lack of price sensitivity also contributes to the long-term increase in baby-formula prices, as both manufacturers and retailers have steadily raised their prices above the overall rate of inflation for years. We don't get short-term price increases when they would help prevent shortages, but we do get long-term price increases that slowly make formula less and less affordable which further encourages WIC expansion.

Increased government involvement in the baby-formula market, while coming from the best of intentions, sets it up for shortages like the one families are currently experiencing

Yeah i was just reading something about the impact of WIC, and came back here and saw your post. That is very interesting. I wondered why the shutdown of just Abbot' capabilities were so impactful, but then read where they have like 2/3 of the individual state WIC deals, so that gives them a huge advantage (and in this case, disadvantage to consumers).
Its an interesting dynamic isn't it, when government dictates business agreements. And I bet some US Senators from Michigan and other states have been bragging for years how they helped negotiate contracts that have helped their hometown manufacturers.

Chem, there is the issue! As much as I want to be part of a free market economy, we just don't have one. The National Review is a Globalist organization. In theory, their argument makes sense; however, free market globalism has truly created the financial issue we are in. This country has to get back into manufacturing without significant federal and state involvement!

National Review is like the Club for Growth. They say all the right things; however, their belief structure is that free market is the ultimate good in all things economic.

I have been and really still am a Free Market person. Additionally, I have seen what the Free Market has done to decimate manufacturing in the US.

Now, let me restate this: Free Market isn't a bad thing; rather, people can't handle the heroin that it is…

Yes, approve $40 billion to Ukraine because we absolutely must protect the sovereignty and borders of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the United States must not have a border, and millions of illegals must be allowed to invade the country, and then we must use taxpayer money to buy them a smart phone and board them onto buses and planes and ship them to red states. Because they are so precious because they will vote for the communist Democrat party.

$40 billion to Ukraine, while everyday Americans are struggling just to get by with skyrocketing inflation and food and fuel prices, and babies don't even have baby formula to eat. Suck it American slaves....we've got Ukrainians and invading south and central Americans to pay for.

Yeah.... but...but... we need to help those struggling Ukranians... I saw on TV last night that Zelensky was dancing at the World Economic Forum while his country was being bombed. Makes sense doesn't it?

They know they have lost the Donbas Region. Russia isn't going to move any further West anytime soon. They took back the part of Ukraine that WANTED to be part of Russia and NOT part of Ukraine.

https://www.nationalreview.com/2022/05/how-bidens-fda-helped-cause-the-baby-formula-crisis/
Quote:

The American public wants baby formula of high quality, as it wants from every other FDA-regulated product. Ironically, it is likely that contamination and other quality-control shortcomings are much more common with other FDA-regulated products from overseas than with the products that sparked the FDA's actions, but we just don't know about them.

In a long series of eleven different tweets (which are worth reading through), Abbott affirms that: "a comprehensive investigation by Abbott, FDA and CDC found no evidence that our formulas caused infant illnesses." Despite these conclusive findings, the Abbott plant still remains closed at the behest of the FDA.

The unequal treatment of American facilities in favor of foreign facilities has been apparent to regulatory experts for decades. FDA-regulated facilities in the U.S. can be inspected by the FDA at any time and for any reason, while facilities located overseas are inspected much less often, with sometimes as much as seven years between routine inspections.

Even worse: In spite of documented, repeated violations by overseas manufacturers, the FDA continues to rely on these foreign manufacturers for information on the quality control of the products they produce. Instead of conducting independent testing of these imported drugs, the FDA trusts the obviously unreliable Chinese and Indian manufacturers at their word. Independent analyses have found that foreign-made drugs show a pattern of mislabeling, potency inaccuracy, and cancer-causing contamination of our critical medicines, but due to language and legal barriers, it is hard to pin down who is responsible, and parent companies face few or no consequences.

While the current system is unfair and favors overseas manufacturers, there is a simple solution. The FDA could perform independent quality-control checks on all foreign and domestically made FDA-regulated products before they get to drugstores, ensuring quality compliance.

The FDA should mandate real-time "release testing" (RTRT) a term of art that refers to comprehensive testing of products on every FDA-regulated item arriving at an American port of entry.

The FDA's current way of doing things is badly outdated and has proven to be politically unworkable, unreliable, and unsafe.
The more I learn about the incompetence of our government agencies, the angrier I get. They are asleep at the wheel!

You can't lord over the needy if they are needy.

It's all part of the MARXISM/COMMUNISM 101.. call it a conspiracy theory or whatever you would like. What you can't call it is a lie.

As long as the people are beholden to the government the government has power. The minute the people don't need the government they figure out the government has been keeping them down.

Why are the lowest educated, poorest, most crime ridden cities in the United States mostly inhabited by African Americans and have been controlled by democrats for upwards of 80+ years? Their "beloved" democrat party knows if they ever lose the base of African Americans they will NEVER hold office again.

So what do they do? They falsely accuse everything Conservative of being some type of "-ist" and that they hate everything to do with them and trying to make their lives better. Which is BS.

I would have to challenge those communities and ask them exactly what the hell has to happen for them to open their eyes and stop voting for the lefties that have had power for so long and done absolutely nothing for them or their cities.

But when you constantly are given "freebies" every two years during election cycles some people could care less........ and that my friends is the damn truth whether you choose to believe it or not.

I do post when I think a new outlook on something may not have been mentioned.

One reason I think the Water Cooler leans conservative is most other social media sites are so biased to the left that the fact checkers, etc tend to bully, censor any viewpoint that doesn't fit their agenda.

With rare exceptions, I don't think anyone has been censored here - which s a good thing.
