Per media and other reports:

RALEIGH, N.C. The founder of Amedeo's Italian restaurant on Western Boulevard has died, the restaurant announced via social media Wednesday.

Dick "Amedeo" DeAngelis came to North Carolina State University from Reading, Penn. in 1954 on a football scholarship. After missing his family's home-cooking, he decided to open a small restaurant featuring some of his mother's and grandmother's homemade Italian recipes.

Amedeo's opened in 1963 and has become a haven for Italian food lovers and N.C. State fans.
DeAngelis sold the restaurant prior to its 50th anniversary.

The restaurant said DeAngelis died Wednesday morning after several years of declining health.

We've enjoyed dining there regularly the past 45 or so years. He built a shrine to the Wolfpack, and is an NC State legend and tradition. Even though it was no longer his, it's still a part of the fabric of Wolfpack Nation.

RIP to a true NC State institution. You done good, friend. Go Pack!

When it was first sold back in the early 2010s, it really went through a down period. But the various news stories noted that some of his kids are part of the ownership of the restaurant currently. Did the famly buy back in? I remember there was an Amedeo's North up in North Ridge at that time that was run by one of the sons, but that place has been closed for years now.

from my increasing failing memory

when Western Boulevard location was sold, family was no longer involved in that location

they opened Amedeos North

new owners changed recipes to save money, quality dropped

new owners brought second generation into Western Boulevard location

several restaurants have failed in the north location, not sure if pricing, competition, etc
