BREAKING: The automated ball-strike system has been approved for use in all college baseball divisions next season.

The Division I Baseball Oversight Committee and the Division II and Division III Playing Rules Oversight Panel voted to give teams the option, when available, of implementing a system to challenge called balls and strikes in regular-season and postseason games.

This will be an experimental rule in all divisions for the 2027 season.

I could be wrong, but I think the relatively poor quality of collegiate umpiring behind the plate will quickly be exposed. Yes, there are some very good umps, but they are out numbered by the Rec league level ones calling balls and strikes. Time will tell.

That can be said of all officials at all levels of all sports

Challenges are good,. I hope that it works smoothly. I see a lot of what sometimes looks like subjectivity in the majors as to when the challenge is granted by the ump, but maybe that's getting better. I also hope that it is quick, reviews are taking way too long in general.

Officiating at any level isn't easy, and they take a lot of crap, especially from me. I actually don't even care if the ump is good, I just want consistency, and I want some sort of accountability when it's inconsistent. If that was always the case, you wouldn't hear a peep from me.
