No. 8 NC State women's tennis doubled down on its season-opening sweep over SMU with two dominant 7-0 wins over Campbell and NC Central in an early-season doubleheader.

The Wolfpack (3-0) brought the brooms to the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center, defeating both the Camels (0-2) and Eagles (0-2) with near-flawless singles and doubles play. NC State didn't drop a single set all day, and 18 matches of winning tennis continued to help the Pack prepare for its long season

"I think we were pretty focused," said senior Amelia Rajecki. "Coach has spoken a lot about this week with us, making sure that we know what we're doing and have the right intentions. And I think everyone went out and achieved that today."

Versus Campbell, 7-0
NC State started its day off strong with a 7-0 sweep over the Campbell Camels. The Wolfpack beat out its opposition with minimal losses in both singles and doubles on the way to a perfect first leg of its doubleheader day.

All three doubles pairs won with ease in the early round. The No. 7 pair of freshman Maddy Zampardo and Rajecki won 6-2, while No. 52 freshman Gabriella Broadfoot and senior Abigail Rencheli clinched the point with a 6-1 win.

The Pack's first singles round went just as smoothly as its doubles. With quick, straight-set wins across the board, Campbell was no match for the red-and-white.

No. 3 Rajecki stormed her Camel opponent on court one with an easy 6-1, 6-3 win. No. 27 Rencheli did the same on Rajecki's adjacent court, downing her opponent 6-1, 6-1 to put NC State into clinch position.
Despite a tough second set, No. 40 sophomore Anna Zyryanova defeated her opponent 6-2, 7-5 to clinch the Pack's win. Zyryanova, who joined NC State just before the start of last year's spring season, has made big strides as a player and member of the Wolfpack.

"I think she's very, very capable as a tennis player," said head coach Simon Earnshaw. "I think she's right there with the older players as far as the type of tennis she can play and maybe even a little bit ahead of them sometimes."

No. 116 Maddy Zampardo faced the most opposition on the day but still pulled out a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win after making a second-set comeback that ended in a tiebreaker win for the freshman.

To finish off the match, No. 19 senior Sophie Abrams won 6-3, 6-0 and freshman Kristina Paskauskas nearly perfected her opponent 6-0, 6-1.

Versus NC Central, 7-0

The Wolfpack didn't lose a step in between its first and second match of the day. NC State pulled off a seamless doubles round to start its second leg. Broadfoot and Rencheli blanked their opponents 6-0 on court two while senior Gina Dittmann and Paskauskas did the same in their 2023 doubles debut on court three.

The red-and-white finished its doubleheader with another dominant singles round. Dittmann followed her doubles win with surgical singles victory, taking court four to put the Pack up 2-0. No. 19 Abrams followed behind her with a 6-4, 6-1 win as the Pack approached its second win of the day.

After a long day of tennis, No. 3 Rajecki made it official with her 6-3, 6-2 match-clinching win on court one despite NC Central giving her more of a battle than she expected.

"Today was mentally, definitely, tough, physically tough," Rajecki said. "But I think I stuck to it. Doubleheaders are always challenging. NC Central came out and they played tough. I didn't expect that. But no, it was just clean, I enjoyed it."

No. 40 Zyryanova extended the lead to 5-0 with her second win of the day, a 6-4, 6-2 finish on court four. Broadfoot then captured her first win in the red and white as she dismantled her Eagle opponent 6-0, 6-0. After Broadfoot's perfect score on court six, Paskauskas finished off the Wolfpack's 14-0 day with a 6-0, 6-2 victory on court five.

Going Forward
After the Pack's doubleheader sweep, it'll turn its attention to the first rounds of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships next weekend.

"Funnily enough, in the two years we didn't make the national indoors, we made the final four," Earnshaw said. "So maybe it's not that important, but I think definitely, to increase your chances of hosting a Regional and hosting a Super Regional, it's an event you want to be in."

Despite any possible superstitions Earnshaw and the Wolfpack have about the event, the National Indoors Tournament presents an opportunity for NC State to add to its resume by playing and beating the best competition from around the country.

The ITA's have not been kind to the Wolfpack in recent seasons especially considering NC State's upset loss to Vanderbilt in 2023 but Earnshaw is determined to succeed this season, starting with a showdown against Alabama.

"I think Alabama has got a very tough roster, got a new coach and I think he's doing a good job there," Earnshaw said. "So we're going to have a tough ask in that in that first match. But I think we're trying to educate [the team] as far as what that then means moving forward."

NC State's ITA Kick-Off Weekend is set to begin on Saturday, Jan. 27 at noon against the Crimson Tide in Raleigh.

Really impressed with how Zyryanova is playing. Was very solid at #3 singles today. Seems like she has made big strides since last year (her true freshman year). Will be interesting to see where she will settle in the lineup. To go from outside the top 6 last year to potentially playing at #3 singles (passing Abrams and Dittmann) would be quite a jump. And if that is the case and Zyryanova has elevated to that level of play, I would feel really good about our 1 and 3-6 singles spots being able to compete against almost any team in the nation (with Rencheli at #2 being the weak link). Rajecki looks very strong and a legit top 10 player in the nation (coming off of a final 4 in the singles tournament last year).

With it being this early in the season, it's tough to say but I think this should be a top 15 team, and could be a top 5 team again if things go well. Unfortunately, unc is the #1 team in the nation again and returns everyone from last years championship team, so it will be very difficult (but not impossible) for us to knock them off. We have some top 10 recruits committed for fall 2024 and 2025, and a lot of momentum going for this program. If we have another top 10 season this year, that will keep the momentum accelerating and it sets up for the team to be extremely good in the 2025 and 2026 seasons with a window to be in the mix as serious contenders for the national title again, as well as potentially gain ground on or even surpass unc as they lose a ton of their best players after this season.

Also, Duke looks to be a little down this year, so hopefully we can beat them this season (which we've been unable to do for the last several years), which would be big for our perceived pecking order in the conference. And we get both Duke and unc at home this season, which helps because there is a home court advantage with the home fan support.

Seventh-ranked NC State Women's Tennis (4-0) began ITA Kickoff weekend with a 4-0 win over Alabama (2-1) Saturday Afternoon from the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.

With the victory, the Wolfpack will now play in the championship game of the Raleigh region on Sunday, Jan. 28, at 3 p.m. against either Iowa or Clemson, with a chance to travel to Seattle, Wa. for the ITA Indoor Championships on Feb. 9-12.

In the first meeting of the two programs, the Wolfpack claimed the doubles point rather quickly as the No. 7 ranked doubles pair Amelia Rajecki and Maddy Zampardo took down Petra Sedlackova and Anna Parkhomenko 6-3. They were followed by a win from the No. 9 Sophie Abrams and Anna Zyryanova, winning 6-3 over Loudmilla Bencheikh and Anne Marie Hiser.

In singles play, it was No. 19 Abrams on court four, finishing first and winning in straight sets 6-0 and 6-1. As Abrams wrapped up her match, No. 3 Rajecki, on court one, took down No. 18 Bencheikh comfortably, 6-0, 6-2.

With the score 3-0 and a point away from clinching the match, No. 40 Zyryanova took her first set 6-0. Set two was a bit closer as Margaux Maquet tried to rally from two games down but could never tie as Zyryanova held on to win 6-4 and send NC State to the finals on Sunday.

Yeah, big home match against Clemson today at 3pm to get to go to Indoor nationals. And this program deserves more fan support.

That's an incredible run. Not even women's cross country can claim that. They've been top 10 for the last 4 years, I think. This women's tennis team over the last 5-6 years is one of the best programs in school history in any sport.

Just as a reminder for those who don't know, it's free entry (no ticket required) to men's and women's tennis matches. And of course parking is free everywhere on campus (no permit required) on weekends and on weekdays after 5pm. And with no baseball game today, you can park in the lot that is right next to the tennis stadium (which is located right next to the baseball stadium).

With no rain forecast it's possible they could play the match outdoors, as it is warm enough.

Quote:

"I was not really playing a lot last season, and I think I did a really good job in the fall," Zyryanova said. "… I was working really hard. I was playing a lot of matches, both college, and just the tour ones. So I think it's just putting all the work together, and it worked out for me."

After beating Alabama, NC State will face either Iowa or Clemson for a chance to advance to Seattle for the National Indoor Team Championships.

"It's a very important weekend," Zyryanova said. "It's qualifying matches for indoors. We didn't make it last time, so I think it's pretty important for our team to claim a high ranking and to make the indoors."

The Wolfpack punched its ticket Sunday to the ITA Indoor Championships with a 4-0 win over Clemson to win the Raleigh Region of ITA Kickoff Weekend.

The win sends the Wolfpack to the ITA Championships for the fifth time in the past six years. NC State (5-0) has won five straight matches to begin the season and has yet to drop a point to an opponent.

First to finish in singles was sophomore No. 40 Anna Zyryanova, who only dropped two games, winning 6-1, 6-1.

Following Zyranova was Amelia Rajecki, who was in control from start to finish, winning 6-0, 6-1. With the win, Rajecki now has 87 career singles' wins with the Wolfpack, putting her in a tie for fifth place on the all-time career wins list.

On court four, Sophie Abrams found herself down after the first set but battled back to win the second set 7-6 (7-3) after being down 4-5 to send it to a third and final set. In the third set, Abrams didn't give an inch, winning 6-3 to clinch the match for the Wolfpack.

Before the team makes the trip to Seattle, the Wolfpack travels to Knoxville to take on No. 17 Tennessee on Saturday. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.

We were dominant yesterday in 3 of the 6 singles matches. But the other 3 were dog fights (at #4, #2, and #5). If all matches were played to completion, we probably would have won 5-2 or 6-1. The matches at #2 (Rencheli) and #5 (Zampardo) could have gone either way.

Clemson, by the way, apparently just spent a ton of money to upgrade their tennis facilities. I was looking at their women's tennis IG account, and there is a pinned post with a short video tour of it. Also, this past off-season they hired the head coach that was at Iowa State (Boomer Saia, who was the Big12 coach of the year in 2021 and 2023, had Iowa State finish #8 in nation in 2023) who significantly elevated the Iowa State program. So it obviously appears that Clemson is going all in to try to be a major player in tennis, and especially women's tennis.

Technician recap with quotes from players and head coach. They got the win, but didn't play quite as well as they would have liked, per coach. The statement from Rajecki about road matches being mentally tough is significant. Definitely an extremely tough stretch coming up here in February, with all 6-7 matches on the road and all of them against top 25 teams. Brutal.

No. 7 Pack women's tennis punches ticket to ITA Indoor Championships with 4-0 win over Clemson

No. 7 NC State women's tennis won its way to a berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle with a 4-0 victory over its ACC rival, Clemson. The win marks the fifth time in the last six years that NC State will compete in the ITA Indoors.

While the 4-0 scoreline initially reads as a quick, eventless win for the Wolfpack, the Tigers put up a fierce fight in singles. Clemson forced multiple three-set matches, tiebreaks and more, but ultimately NC State won the three singles matches it needed for its second win of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.

"I thought some courts it was clinical," said senior Amelia Rajecki. "On other courts, I think it was a battle, but you always have that. No match is going to be easy. No, I thought we did well today. Did the business. It's nice to do that."

After a doubles win and two quick singles victories, the Pack's momentum hit a wall. In search of its fourth point of the day, Clemson did everything it could to deny its opponents. However, after falling 6-4 in her first set, senior Sophie Abrams battled back from a 4-5 deficit in her second, eventually forcing a tiebreaker.

With her back against the wall, Abrams gutted out a 7-3 win in her breaker and won her third and final set 6-3 to clinch the Pack's victory.

Before Abrams' clutch comeback, No. 50 freshman Anna Zyryanova and No. 3 Rajecki earned smooth, straight-set wins on courts three and one, respectively. Zyryanova took out her Tiger opponent 6-1, 6-1 while Rajecki won 6-0, 6-2 on court one as she continued her dominant play from the Pack's previous win over Alabama.

Besides Zyryanova and Rajecki, NC State struggled to overcome the Tigers in singles, especially with No. 27 senior Abigail Rencheli caught in an intense battle on court two. The senior squeezed out a 7-5 win in her first set, lost her second 6-0 and played a third set that was going down to the wire until play was stopped.

Meanwhile, No. 116 freshman Maddy Zampardo found herself in a first-set tiebreaker and senior Gina Dittmann nearly clinched the match herself when Abrams finished off her three-setter on court four. For head coach Simon Earnshaw, there were still some gaps in the Pack's play even in a 4-0 win.

"The significance that we qualify for Indoors is great," Earnshaw said. "But I wouldn't say this is really a match you build off. I think we expected to win, and we did win. That's kind of the way it is, I think. I'd like to have seen us play a little better in some spots."

NC State will now embark on a month-long, cross-country road trip before returning to the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on March 1. With trips to Tennessee, Seattle for the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, Michigan and Oklahoma, the Wolfpack has a daunting February ahead of itself.

"Mentally, it's very tough being on the road," Rajecki said. "I think for our freshmen, that's definitely going to be a challenge. For the seniors, we've seen this a lot. So I think just taking it one day at a time [is good] as well. You've got long weeks, a lot of travel. You just got to make sure that you stick to your goals and just make sure that you do the work."

Contending with travel is one thing, but competing week-in, week-out against the nation's top team is an entirely different challenge. Over the course of the next month, NC State is slated to play No. 17 Tennessee, No. 5 Michigan, No. 16 Oklahoma and the currently unknown, undoubtedly ranked competition it'll face in Seattle at the ITA's.

"[The team has] got to apply themselves better, and we definitely will need to do that in February," Earnshaw said. "We have six, possibly seven really, really rugged matches coming up right now."

The red-and-white's jet-setting February will begin Saturday, Feb. 3 against the Volunteers. First serve is set for 1 p.m.

After another undefeated weekend and advancing to the ITA Indoor Championships, Amelia Rajecki was named ACC Player of the Week, and Sophie Abrams and Anna Zyryanova took home doubles team of the week honors.

Rajecki has yet to drop a single set all season, as she helped guide the No. 7 Wolfpack to a 2-0 weekend and a trip to the ITA Indoor Championships for the fifth time in the last six seasons. The senior posted a win over Alabama's No. 18 Loudmilla Bencheikh, 6-0, 6-2, finishing first on Court 1. She then defeated Clemson's Eleni Louka, 6-0, 6-2, to lead NC State to a 4-0 win. With the two singles wins, the Nottingham, England, native sits fifth all-time on the Wolfpack career singles win list with 87.

Abrams and Zyryanova continue to lead the Wolfpack in doubles play, adding two more wins to stay undefeated at 4-0 on the season. The No. 9 ranked pair has been the first to finish their match all season to help NC State secure the doubles point, and as a team, the Wolfpack has yet to drop a point to an opponent. They had little trouble in their first-ranked matchup against Alabama, winning 6-3. With the win, Abrams entered the Wolfpack's top 10 for career doubles wins with 64, putting her ninth on the list.
