Doeren: "We're Disappointed"

NC State head coach Dave Doeren met with the media after the 30-24 loss to Wake Forest.

Opening Statement...
Disappointed in the outcome. We had 502 yards and 94 plays... to only get 24 points and fumble going in to win the game on the goalline... that's the game. We have to make those kind of plays.

I don't know if the wind really affected Kelvin.  He had two or three pretty key drops.

Defensively, struggled in the first half but made some good adjustments in the second.  Obviously their slot receiver did some things on us that we didn't defend well early in the game, but I thought we adjusted well and played much better in the second half.

We gave up too many points early and offensively the turnover, the first we were able to overcome and the second was a game-winner for them.

You have to give Wake credit.

We're disappointed... for us though guys kept playing. 94 plays, 502 yards, they had 56 for 334... we had the ball for 40 minutes, they had it for 18 and we lose. Other than losing the turnover margin, but that's the game. We have to make the plays when they are there.

Thoughts on missing players...
It doesn't help when you're missing some playmakers obviously. Nyheim was banged up, tried to go back in and struggled.  They took him in and said he couldn't play. Steph's ankle just wasn't good enough to play today. It hurts when you don't have all your guys out there, but they were missing a d-lineman on their sideline.

We had enough players to win the game, we just didn't make enough plays. That's the bottomline.

Both of those drives got us down in scoring positions. We just didn't finish.

What will you say to Emeka Emezie?
I haven't talked to [Emeka] yet, but I'll go down there and cousel him.  He was excited as a kid could be after his first touchdown. We were thrilled for him. I feel for him. Obviously it's not intentional, but he didn't have good ball security. You could see him swinging it going in... he'll learn from it, but too bad it was that play.  It was the play that put us up by one.

Why was Shawn Boone moved to safety from nickelback?
We felt like we were missing too many tackles at safety, and Shawn is our best tackler back there.

Also, Chris Ingram has got better and better and better. Obviously watching him tonight you wouldn't think it... he was ready, and he's our best coverage player that we have. He's doing a lot of really good things, I just think what they were doing with their slot receiver against that coverage was challenging. We had him bracketed one time and he ran by both of them.

That's why, we just felt like some of the long runs and the way they ran the football last couple of games, we needed a safety to knock things down with Shawn back there, and we felt like Chris could cover as well as Shawn would in the slot.

Thoughts on Wake's offensive scheme...
They are running the ball and throwing it down the field.  Their linemen don't go down the field, so I'm not saying they are doing anything illegal.  They are blocking inside zone so you're fitting up run plays as a defensive lineman. It doesn't look like pass or feel like pass.  You're not getting your typical rush on a pass play.

It's a seven-man protection on a four-man rush a lot of times. We started bringing a fifth guy, but it's still a seven-on-five. We had to win some one-on-ones and we weren't doing that enough.
