The players’ comments from the press conference are transcribed below.

Isaiah Moore

“I just think we came out slow. It’s their first game. I’m sure they were excited just like we were last week. Kudos to them for starting fast. We’ve got to do a better job.”

“It’s a long season. One game doesn’t define who we are. We know we aren’t the team that we played like today, and we’ve got to fix it in film. We’ve got to get back to it next week.”

“[Khalid Martin] was talking. He told us to finish the game strong. We all just told him we loved him, and we were going to finish the game for him. We’re going to keep praying for him, and we hope that he’s doing well.”

“I think it was a little bit of both. We’ve got to find out what went wrong, get back in the film room, and get better for next week.”

“They had a lot of vertical run schemes. We didn’t tackle well overall, and I’ll start with me on that. I didn’t tackle well tonight along with the rest of our team. It’s just something we’ve got to get better at in practice, and we’ve just got to get better for next week."

“We had gotten momentum going into the second half. It’s just something that we’ve got to go back and practice this week, work on some new things, tweak it a little bit, and get ready for Pittsburgh.”

“It was mainly our concerns for Khalid. Of course we lost the game. We’ve just got to watch the tape, learn from our mistakes, and get ready for next week.”

“We kind of hurt ourselves with the penalties, a couple of false starts, and turning the ball over. It’s just some stuff that we’ve got to fix on our own. They didn’t do anything special. We just weren’t executing.”

“I just feel for Khalid because I know I was once in that spot before. His main concern was just finishing the game. That’s something that he just kept saying while he was on the ground. ‘Finish the game. Finish the game. It’s not even the fourth quarter yet, guys. I’ll be all right.’ I did what any leader would do. I brought the team together, told them what Khalid said, and said a special prayer for him. He’s going to be back on his feet soon.”

“We just didn’t execute. We just hurt ourselves with the penalties. We’ve just got to do better.”

“It just shows our character and how much we love each other inside the locker room. It’s more than just a football team. It’s a brotherhood. We care for Khalid. We care for everybody on the team like our own brothers. With that being said, when Khalid said, ‘Go tell the boys to finish the job,’ I told the boys we had to finish the job for Khalid."
