IPS NC State Fantasy Basketball Draft: Final Two Rounds And Rosters

July 12, 2020

Inside Pack Sports staff members James Henderson, Jon Stout, Ethan Barry, and Andrew Schnittker recently conducted an all-time NC State Fantasy Basketball Draft.

The six-round snake draft consisted of each team selecting two guards, two forwards, a post, and a flex position.

The draft order was random generated with Ethan receiving the first pick followed by Andrew, James, and Jon.

Here is a look at the write-ups for the first two rounds of the draft: LINK

Here is a look at the write-ups for the 3rd and 4th rounds of the draft: LINK

NOTE: We will post two rounds of each draft. Following the three stories we will also post the podcast of the actual draft.

ROUND 5

5.01 Ethan Barry - Guard Anthony Grundy

Grundy is actually not the top guy on my board at this point (Markell Johnson is), but in terms of fit, I’ve got to go Grundy.  Ninth in school history in scoring and second in steals speaks for itself.

I’ve got a very, very good defensive backcourt at this point and plenty of scoring, as well.

5.02 Andrew Schnittker - Post Thurl Bailey

Bailey may not be a true post player, but he’ll work here.

He’s top 20 in school history in rebounds, and at 6-11 and 215 pounds can get in there to rebound and block shots for me; he also averaged 16.1 points per game in 1983.

Had to get some star power from that team.

5.03 James Henderson - Guard Markell Johnson

I wanted two specific guys to fill out my team and I felt my other guy would slide, so I had to go with Markell Johnson given my roster makeup.

An All-ACC PG and dynamic playmaker, imagine Johnson with weapons like Warren, Carr, Googs, and Fuller around him.  Scary.

I needed a facilitator and he fits the bill for sure... ideal fit.

5.04 Jon Stout - Forward Lorenzo Charles

Having put a two-hand slam on the most iconic moment not only in school history, but also one of the most in all of sports, I’m glad the late Lorenzo Charles was available here. Adding at least one player with championship experience was a goal heading into the draft.

Charles is most remembered for his last-second heroics as a sophomore in 1983, but he was a star in his final two seasons with the Pack. He averaged 18 points and 7.3 rebounds as an upperclassman, resulting in back-to-back first-team All-ACC awards and third-team All-American honors as a junior.

ROUND 6

6.01 Jon Stout - Flex Cat Barber

This is another “favorites” pick for me – Cat Daddy. Barber is easily one of the shiftiest and fastest guards I’ve seen on the basketball court. I love his ability to burn past defenders and score from everywhere on the floor.

His first two years with NC State were productive, but Barber took it to another level in his final season as a junior during the 2015-2016 campaign. Barber was named first-team All-ACC after leading the conference with 23.5 points per game, which also ranked 7th in the nation. His 776 total points are the third most in school history as a junior, trailing only Kenny Car (798) and David Thompson (805).

Barber ranks 5th all-time at NC State with eight 30-point games, but the quick-scoring guard was also an efficient distributor of the basketball, finishing his career 8th at NC State with 403 assists.

6.02 James Henderson - Guard Dennis Smith Jr.

Smith was the best player left on my board, and I didn’t believe Stout would take him, so that’s why I went with Markell first.

I'm playing to win, and I know that while some fans for whatever reason are critical of Smith as a player, he was really good. All-ACC... ACC Rookie of the Year... top 10 pick as a true freshman.

I really like my team.

6.03 Andrew Schnittker - Forward C.J. Leslie

Another player some State fans seem to be down on, and I’ve never really understood that. Could C.J. Leslie have done more at State?

Probably. Did he still do a hell of a lot? Yes.

Leslie was on the ACC All-Freshman team in 2011 and also made the second and third teams in his career. He’ll give me a little added size, and with 13.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in his career is a player I’m happy to bring off the bench.

4.04 Ethan Barry - Flex Sam Ranzino

I was hoping to get one of the recent big-time talents State has had (Smith Jr, Johnson, Leslie), but it didn’t happen, so I’ll “settle” for the number four scorer in school history.

I have no business getting the No. 4 scorer at the last pick in a 24-person draft, so I feel great about this.

He won four straight conference titles, got the school to its first Final Four, was an all-American and first round pick. This is a no-brainer for me.
