NC State head coach Dave Doeren discussed the Clemson, his defense, and much more with the media after Thursday's practice.

50 pass attempts last year, one sack. Is some of that gameplan and shows how good the offensive line has to be on Saturday?
Yes, we have to play as good as we can against their front. They have a NFL front, and they do a lot of stuff with them.

It's not just blocking really good players. There are a lot of different games.... stunts, and adding in defensive backs and linebackers with them.

We have our hands full, but we are excited about it. Our guys have done a great job thus far with all the stuff they have seen.

The quick-passing game can help in that regard too. How important is it for Ryan to hit those short, quick passes?
What we do, moving the ball around, playing with tempo, giving them different things to look at and think about... the way we run our system, we have to do that. We also have to take advantage of tight coverage and get behind them.

We just have to run our offense and execute... give Ryan a chance to do what he does at the line of scrimmage.

With Prescod and Bradbury getting national honors at the mid-year point... they are great examples of what you start with and how you finish.
They deserve the credit for buying in. You can develop only if you want to develop. The mindset those guys have to be workers and having a plan in place with our strength and nutrition staff to be how they want to be physically.

They deserve all the credit they get. They are playing hard and are tough guys.

Like I told them, it would be better to win it than just get a mid-year deal so just keep doing it.

Finley has thrown four interceptions against Clemson but typically doesn't do that. What do you feel like has led to that against Clemson?
They have good defensive backs. They are going to have tight coverage and compete for balls.  Our guys have to win those competitions and if they can't catch them, break them up. There are going to be 50-50 balls in the game because we will give our guys chances.

How many passes is that out of? He threw four picks in how many passes? The guy plays pretty good and he's going to put it in some tight spots.

We have to win those balls.

Harmon and Meyers had over 100 yards last year in this game. What led to their success?
Well, there is a lot of one-on-one coverage and both are really good wide receivers so they are going to win their share.

I know on their side they are talking about keeping them in front and tackling. We have to win our share of those too, breaking tackles and creating explosive plays after the catch.

How important are the safeties against explosive plays?
That's why they are named the safety. That's the name of the position for a reason.

It's critical. Our overlap players, wherever they are coming from, has to be where they are supposed to be.

The pursuit our guys have, because we are going to miss tackles, you won't make everyone... missing it with the proper leverage so that the other guys can get it down to the ground.

They thrive on explosive plays on offense. One of the keys for us is limiting those and not allowing any explosive touchdowns.

How much better is Etienne this year?
He's their guy. To me, he is the one who stirs the pot for their offense. He's playing with a lot of confidence and he's getting the ball more. He scores every eight touches.  He's a really dynamic player.

Last year they didn't use him as much in that role and the run game featured the QB-run game which they aren't doing now so he's getting the ball more.
