NC State head coach Dave Doeren met with the media to discuss Friday's Sun Bowl game against Arizona State.

Your thoughts on Arizona State's defense?
They are a team that plays very sound. They don’t do a ton of things — a lot of quarters in their coverage — two really active linebackers.

The defense averages almost 10 plays in the backfield per game, very disruptive with 38 sacks on the year, 11 interceptions. But not a big pressure football team until they get in the red zone.

Your thought on the seniors that play their final college game at the Sun Bowl?
Just the process with them. Going through, recruiting them, growing them up from 18 to 22, 23. Tony Adams, it was his 22nd birthday today.

Just seeing that process. Guys that are college graduates, guys with NFL opportunities and there are guys with jobs — and seeing some of the immature things grow out of them and to see them turn into leaders. Guys that have legacy in their blood that pass things back to younger players, all of that just makes you proud to be a part of it.

The weirdest or most fun thing that’s happened in El Paso so far?  What's your favorite memory so far?
I thought the hypnotist, that was long, but I had no idea that we had so many runway models.  They got them up doing that; it was pretty funny.

What's the challenge with a month-long layoff?
You always worry about how clean you can play. you see a lot of turnovers in bowl games, a lot of penalties... ball-security issues. Those are things we've addressed with our team.

Defensively, it's been a month since we've had live practice so you can only so much... in practice with fundamentals... leverages, but you'll have some rust.

You mentioned a two-pound steak. What's the story?
The steakhouse they took us to had some gigantic cuts of meat out there.

Did anybody finish the two-pounder?
Absolutely. I did.

Any decision on whether Bradley Chubb will play?
We are not going to talk about it. The whole focus of the bowl season is to was for the team to be able to benefit from the work they’ve done. Bradley made it clear he wanted to come and enjoy their company and be a part of the bowl experience and not make it about him.

What does it say about Chubb that he’d come to El Paso in spite of the speculation?
It is just who he is. We are at the children’s hospital and he is the first one in the room. As big as he has become nationally he still just a guy that loves being around his brothers, his coaches and the program.
