Wolfpack volleyball head coach Megan Wargo-Kearney announced the addition of coaching veteran Rob Browning to the staff as an assistant coach Monday afternoon.
Browning comes to Raleigh after spending the last two decades as the head coach of St. Mary's College of California women's volleyball program.
Throughout his tenure leading the Gaels, he led the program to five NCAA appearances and its first West Coast Conference Championship in 2009. He also helped establish the beach volleyball program in 2013, making it the 17th intercollegiate sport at SMC.
During the 2018-19 seasons, the indoor program went 19-10 and beach finished 20-9. The first-ranked beach duo of Lindsay Knudsen and Sarah Chase were voted as the WCC Beach Pair of the Year. In 2016, the Gaels swept the postseason awards as they took home Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Freshman of the Year.
In 2009, Browning led the indoor program to its first ever conference championship. The Gaels dominated the league, leading the WCC in every statistical category.
Off the court, Browning's teams were also known for their abilities in the classroom. The program regularly ranked among the departments best in terms of grade point average and seven squads earned the AVCA Team Academic Award.
Prior to heading to Moraga, California, Browning spent six years as an assistant coach for the USA Men's National Team under Doug Beal. He went to four Olympic games with the USA men's team: 2000 in Sydney, 2004 in Athens, 2008 in Beijing (gold medal), and 2012 London. He also coached the USA Women's National Team in both the 2019 Pan Am Cup (gold medal) and Pan Am Games. In addition, Browning coached the USA Women's Junior National Team to the NORCECA Championship in 2010 and a fourth place finish at the Junior World Championships in Peru in 2011.
Prior to his time with the men's national team, he served as an assistant for the BYU men's volleyball team for three years, helping the program to its first NCAA National Championship in 1999.
A native of Newport Beach, California, Browning earned his bachelor's degree from BYU in 1990 in Spanish Translation with a minor in International Relations. He was a member of the men's volleyball team from 1987-1989.
