WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Joshua Davis started the indoor season off with a bang as he broke his own all-time NC State record in the men's weight throw Saturday afternoon at the JDL College Kick-off Classic. The redshirt-senior from Pelham, N.C. tossed a distance of 76' 3" (23.24m), which also broke the JDL Fast Track facility record. Overall, the Pack totaled 10 ACC Indoor Championship qualifying marks.

Throws:
Redshirt-freshman Tyson Fortenberry got the day started for NC State, competing in the men's shot put. He recorded a mark of 53' 2.75" (16.22m) to place third at the meet in his collegiate debut.

Lauren Evans represented NC State on the women's side in the shot put. She put up a silver-medal performance at 49' 4.5" (15.05m), a mark well-above the ACC Indoor qualifying standard.

Davis' historic weight throw came in the second heat of the event. His mark was dominant, as no other athlete in the field boasted a throw greater than 20 meters. Fortenberry competed alongside Davis, notching a distance of 51' 1.75" (15.59m) in his collegiate weight throw debut to place sixth at the meet.

Evans capped off the throws crew's historic day as she set a new PR and placed first overall in the weight throw at 67' 8" (20.62m). That mark ranks second all-time on the NC State Top-10 List.

Sprints:
Gabriele Cunningham continued to do what she does best: run fast. The Charlotte native posted ACC qualifying times of 7.45 and 7.42 in the 60m dash prelims and finals, respectively. Her mark of 7.42 earned a first-place finish at the meet and was just .03 seconds off her school-record mark of 7.39 that she set last season.

Janel Pate finished fourth in the meet's 60m finals, posting a mark of 7.58 in her first race with the Wolfpack.

On the men's side, Cravont Charleston was the Pack's top dog in the 60m, running marks of 6.77 and 6.75 in the prelims and finals, where he finished second overall. Shannon Patterson (6.87) and Dylan Peebles (6.88) also posted ACC Indoor qualifying marks in prelims at the season-opening meet.

The Pack women claimed third place in the 4x400m, as Cunningham, Pate, Lauren White and Alexis Postell finished with a time of 3:52.79. NC State ended the day with a gold medal as the Wolfpack men placed first in the 4x400m. Peebles, Sam Krehnbrink, Patterson and Will Hoffmann threw down a time of 3:14.95, edging second-place North Carolina A&T by .02 seconds.

Jumps:
True freshman Ashley Ho made her NC State debut, clearing 1.65m (5'5") in the women's high jump to place T-3rd at the meet.

Michelle Cobb has already qualified for the ACC Indoor Championships in the women's triple jump after her gold-medal performance Saturday afternoon. The freshman from Asheville, N.C. placed first with a mark of 39' 11.25" (12.17m) in her college debut.

Christopher Garrick was the final competitor for the NC State jumps crew. The high jumper placed second overall at the meet, clearing 2.10m to secure his spot early for the ACC Championships.

The Wolfpack begins action at the meet Thursday evening with the women's and men's DMR finals and will continue competition with full days of events on Friday and Saturday.

PACKING THE ACC:
NC State heads to the 2018 ACC Indoor Championships with the following marks in the top-10 of the conference standings:

NATIONAL IMPLICATIONS:
NC State looks to challenge for team and individual titles this weekend, but the Wolfpack will also aim post marks to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, which are set to take place March 9-10 in College Station, Texas.

Currently, four NC State athletes are in qualifying position, sitting in the top 16 of their respective events, with four others within eight spots of the top 16.

SPRINTS/HURDLES:
The NC State men took over the 200m, holding three of the top five times in the conference. Dylan Peebles' ACC-best mark of 20.87 ties for 13th in the nation, and Cravont Charleston (21.28) and Shannon Patterson (21.29) follow him with the conference's fourth and fifth-best marks.
Charleston, who was runner up in the 60m dash at the 2017 ACC Indoor Championships, currently ranks second in the conference and 25th nationally with his 6.65 mark. J Johnson joins him in the top five of the 60m dash with a time of 6.74.
On the women's side, Gabriele Cunningham heads into the indoor postseason after a record-breaking regular season, during which she established new school records in the 60m dash (7.31) and the 60 hurdles (8.05). Her hurdles mark puts her among some of the best in the country, currently ranking sixth in the nation and second in the ACC.

DISTANCE:
Elly Henes leads the Wolfpack women distance runners with an ACC-best 3,000m time of 9:11.95. She also owns the conference's best mark in the 5,000m.

Dominique Clairmonte holds two times that are good for top 10 in the conference with her mile mark (4:44.85) and her 5,000m mark (16:14.92).

JUMPS:

For the men, Christopher Garrick looks to earn his third-straight Indoor All-ACC honors in the high jump, after having been named to the team during both his freshman and sophomore years.

THROWS:
Joshua Davis comes into the weekend having earned back-to-back podium finishes and First Team All-ACC honors in the weight throw at the indoor conference meet, having placed third in the event two years in a row. The Wolfpack senior stands in a good position for success this year, as his 76' 3" (23.24m) throw from the JDL College Kick-off is first in the ACC and second in the nation. Four of his other throws from the season would also be good for top-10 national marks.
Lauren Evans owns the conference's top weight throw mark for the women, as her 67' 8" (20.62m) throw from her first meet of the season has yet to be bested by any other thrower in the conference.
