Wolfer79, if youd prefer to start an official thread or turn this into an official thread thats fine, just wanted to post a preview for those that are unfamiliar with the track programs at large.

Wanted to start on the topic since some of the athletes are going to run a season opener in just a few weeks in Boston before taking a break again before the real season begins in earnest in January.

Many people on the forum have become familiar with NC State running over the past year or two due to the success of the women's cross country team and the individual success of Katelyn Tuohy in track and cross country. I know most people aren't really hardcore fans in general of the sport and just enjoy watching an NC State team experience success, but maybe the increased exposure will have a few people latch on to both the men's a womens programs going forward. While they were deservedly overshadowed by the women's team title, the men finished 11th at XC nationals! Thats a great race to be proud of and a program worth following here at NC State.

Going to go through event by event with people i think could/should contribute a lot to us this year. You'll see some unique events in indoor track, where some meets will race a 300m, 600m, 1000m, etc., But i'm going to focus on the ones that are raced at ACC's and NCAA's.

60M- Alan Alvarez per Gopack roster is taking his covid year and will be competing again this year. While he is probably going to run the 200 more often, he did finish 15th at ACC indoors last year with a 6.85s 60 meters. Isaiah Gadson ran a 6.89s 60 last year as a freshman to finish 16th at ACC indoors, and has run a 10.55 100m outdoors. Henry Young has run a 6.94 60m and a 10.53 100m outdoors. Incoming Freshman Lance Patterson has run a 6.82 55m dash.

200M - Alexander Nunley ran a 21.17 200m outdoors last year as a freshman. Alan Alvarez has a 21.25 PB. Isaiah Gadson has run a 21.43 PB and Henry Young has run a 21.44 PB. If one of them is able to translate this speed to indoors we could have a potential scorer at ACC's.

400M - Don't really have anyone that specializes in the 400m. A lot of the 200 and 800 guys have dabbled in the 4x400 relay when we run it, but dont really run the open 400m. Chris Jenkins is the only guy i could find with collegiate experience in the open 400 but its not a very competitive time on the ACC level.

800M - We've got a couple of guys with potential to score at ACC's here. Kyle Durham and Zach Hughes have been passing school records back and forth over the past year. Durham currently holds the indoor school records in the 600M with 1:19.48 and the 800M with 1:50.46, while Hughes took the school record this past spring in the outdoors with a 1:49.12. A 1:49 low indoors will get you scoring points at ACC's in most years. We also feature Jake Toomey (was just 6th on the team at NCAA XC) in this event with a 1:50.84 PB outdoors as well as Ares Epps, with a 1:50.40 PB. Gopack is indicating that Gavin Gaynor (which would be huge for the team) is going to be using his Covid year of eligibility and he has a 1:49.95 career PB.

Mile - Brett Gardner is probably our best at this distance, having run a 4:00 mile equivalent last outdoor season. Gavin Gaynor (again, if he is truly running this year) has about the same PB equivalent. Ian Harrison has run a 4:05 PB equivalent. Some of our other runners with better PB's in this event probably will be focusing on longer distances such as Ian Shanklin and Robinson Snider. Shanklin has a 4:03 mile equivalent in the 1500 earlier in his career and Snider has run

3000M - .A really competitive distance among the team. Ian Shanklin, Gavin Gaynor, Ian Harrison, and Robinson Snider all have PB's between 8:03 and 8:06. I would expect Shanklin and Snider to focus on the 5k but may run both at ACC's. I think this may be an event Brett Gardner focuses on as well. His PB in this specific event is "only" 8:14, but considering his massive improvement his XC season i can see him taking a another step forward on the track as well.

5000M - Ian Shanklin is the standout here having run a school re cord 13:23 PB outdoors in 2021. Robinson Snider has a 13:49 PB, Ian Harrison has a 13:57 PB. Brett Gardner doesn't race may open 5000's on the track but it feels like he is in sub 14:00 shape as well.

60 Hurdles - Josh Brockman redshirted last year's indoor season, and has a PB of 7.81s. But considering his rapid improvement into the school record holder in the 110 hurdles during 2022 outdoors, i think there are big things in store for him this year. Cameron Murray was 4th at ACC indoors last year and has a 7.73s PB.

4x400 m relay - NC state contests this generally with a mishmash of 200 and 800 specialists. Dont' expect us to be competitive here.

Distance Medley Relay - A very unique track event where each member of the team runs a different distance for their leg. Traditionally the event goes 1200 meter leg (3 laps of a standard track), 400 meter leg (1 lap), 800 meter leg (2 laps) and closed with a 1600 meter leg. NC State placed 3rd at ACC's last year and return all of those runners.

High Jump - NC State made a big splash signing one of the best jumps prospects to ever come out of North Carolina, Kyzaiah Stone. He is the NC High School all time record holder in the high jump with a jump of 7'1", which is already competitive for an ACC individual title as a high schooler. He is already only 3 inches from the school record. The Sky is the limit for this young man.

Pole Vault - I dont believe we have any pole vaulters on our roster.

Long Jump - This is a tough one to get a read on until the season starts as there a few people who have graduated and would need to be using covid years but are listed on the Gopack roster. One is Von Douglas, with a PB of 26'6.25" and a few All-Acc performances under his belt, his return would be a huge addition to the team. Another is Jamar Davis with a 25'2" PB and an Indoor All-Acc performance in his career in the LJ as well. If they are not competing this year, we are relying on Cameron Murray with his 25'7" PB, and Chris Alexander, who is more known as a triple jumper, with his 25'2" PB. Maybe a couple of other young guys can step up as well.

Triple Jump - Sort of a similar situation in regards to Von Douglas and Jamar Davis status being in the air and the impact they can have on this event, however our #1 in this event is Chris Alexander who is definitely returning with his 53 foot PB and being 3/3 on finishing top 6 at ACC Indoors and scoring, as well as finishing 13th nationally at NCAA indoors last year.

Shot Put - Lance Penegar was set to be our top returner here with a 52 foot PB, but i dont see him listed on the Gopack roster right now so i dont know the situation there. Fortunately however that shakes out, we have a couple of super talented young men joining the program this year in Nathan Lau and Denmar Chambers. Lau boasts a shotput PB of 51'0.25" and Chambers has a massive PB of 61 feet and was runner up at NC 4A state championships last year. Chambers has a chance to be competitive in the ACC from day 1.

Weight Throw - Pretty much the same situation pending Lance Penegar's status being cleared up. However both Nathan Lau and Denmar Chambers have a 177 foot PB at the Discus in high school which is a distance that can compete for top 10 in the ACC from day 1, so they should be able to translate that to the Weight throw indoors.

Heptathlon - I dont think we have anyone currently slated to run the multi events this year.

Heats posted for the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season opener in Boston taking place this Saturday. This meet traditionally is a few pro runners will mix in with some top NCAA XC runners who are looking to snag a PR or NCAA qualifying standard time while they are still in shape from peaking for XC nationals. The 5k has a rabbit to pace the races towards a pre-agreed pace. Different heats with different paces and runners sorted amongst the heats based on their PR's.

For the men, Ian Shanklin is registered in heat 2 of the 5k with a 13:25 pace scheduled. His outdoor PR is 13:23 but this pace would be a pretty massive indoor PR for him and a school record by quite a bit. His current indoor PR is 13:48 and the school record is 13:43 by Ryan Hill in 2013. Brett Gardner is registered in heat 4 with a 13:45 pace. I don't think Gardner has ever run a 5k on the track in college,

For the 3K, Gardner is also registered. I'm guessing he'll run the 3k in the end but we'll see. Gardner's 3k best indoors is 8:14.

Just in case the guys have great days, these are the current school top 10 lists indoors for the 3k and 5k

Start lists have been updated. I no longer see Ian Shanklin registered in the 5000. I also no longer see Brett Gardner double registered, he seems to have dropped the 3000 but will still run the 5000.

Brett Gardner with a 13:48.77 in heat 4 of the men's 5k. Makes him the 5th fastest individual in schools history at 5k indoors. Great performance from him.

The NC State track and field programs started the 2022-23 with a pair of weekend events in Boston and Winston-Salem.

Sam Bush set a school record in Boston at the Sharon Colyear-Danville season opener hosted by Boston University.

Bush posted a 8:54.12 in the 3K, finishing third in the event. Last season she set a school record in the 1000m at the Hokie Invitational with a time of 2:43.30.

Katelyn Tuohy was the first collegiate finisher in the 5000m run, crossing the line in 15:15.92. That ranks No. 9 all-time in college history. The time was also an NC State indoor school record. Her teammate Kelsey Chmiel finished 8th (15:27.83). Sydney Seymour finished 13th (15:35.61).

Gionna Quarzo (62nd, 16:25.97) rounded out the Wolfpack runners in the 5000.

Brett Gardner finished 57th in the men's 5000m with a time of 13:48.77.

Winston-Salem College Kickoff

Sydney Freeman, Timara Chapman, Jakerra Convington and Mahkayla Hart participated in field events at the Winston-Salem College Kickoff.

Freeman finished fifth in the shot put (13.25m) and weight throw (16.79m).

Hart also participated in the weight throw, finishing ninth (19.29m).

Freeman was joined in the shot put competition by Chapman (8th, 12.22m) and Covington (15th, 10.36m).

NC State will open the real indoor season this coming weekend with the Virginia Tech Invitational. Traditionally this is not a meet that the distance runners open with (they usually open the following weekend at the Hokie Invite, yes VT hosts events on back to back weekends). Traditionally we send some athletes from the sprints, hurdles, jumps and throws and let distance build for one more week before opening their season.

entries

The entry lists confirms we are sticking with the normal plan.

On the men's side, we have 5 runners on the entry list for the 60m dash in Josh Brockman, Isaiah Gadson, Alex Lang, Cameron Murray, & Henry Young. Lang holds the fastest PB in the group with 6.78 though it was set back in 2019. Brockman is the school record holder in the 110 hurdles outdoors but i dont show that he has a 60m dash result in college, will be interesting to see how he runs.

We have Alexander Nunley in the 300 meters along with freshman Lance Patterson making his collegiate debut. Nunley ran a 34.83 in his only recorded 300 race but he was a top 20 finisher at both the 100m and 200m at last years ACC outdoor championships.

The only other track event we are entered in is the 4x400m, for which we dont really have any true 400m specialists (unless Lance Patterson ends up there). Alexander Nunley, Josh Brockman, Lance Patterson, Henry Young will be racing this in that order.

One event i am very interested in is the High Jump with freshman Kyzaiah Stone entered for his collegiate debut. He has the 10th highest recorded jump in NC prep history with a high jump of 7'1".

In the Long Jump we have Jamar Davis, Cameron Murray and William Sistruck entered. Murray and Davis were 10th and 11th in the long jump at ACC indoors last year respectively. Sistruck was 23rd at ACC indoors.

Davis is also entered in the Triple Jump where he finished 10th at ACC indoors last year.

Freshman Nathan Lau is making his debut in the Shotput and Weight throw as well.

It's the spring semester, which means it's time for track and field. Last year, two female distance runners, who also competed for the two-time national champion Wolfpack cross country team, ended the season with multiple first-place finishes at the ACC Track and Field Championships. Senior Sam Bush and junior Katelyn Tuohy will look to continue their dominance in 2023.

Women

Bush and Tuohy headline the women's track roster but are joined by freshman Grace Hartman and junior Gionna Quarzo, both of whom got their feet wet last month at the Boston Opener.

Apart from distance runners, graduate student Savannah Shaw performed well last season, placing fifth in the women's 5000-meter at last year's Raleigh Relay.

Junior Mahkayla Hart will be returning after recording a personal-best 52.06-meter hammer throw at last year's ACC championships and will look to improve upon that to represent the Pack in that event this year.

Men

The men aren't as star-studded as the women but have big names in their own right. Graduate sprinter Alan Alvarez is a former All-ACC performer, graduate jumper Jamar Davis is a former NCAA All-American and distance runner Gavin Gaynor is a five-time recipient of All-ACC honors.

Both the male and female squads have a handful of freshmen, with eight women and seven men looking to make their mark. Among these freshmen are women's distance runner Briley Bickerstaff, women's thrower Ta'Honny Exum and men's jumper Kyzaiah Stone, all of whom were decorated high school athletes in their respective events.

Schedule

The Pack will travel to Blacksburg, Virginia the weekend of Jan. 13 to participate in the VT Invitational. The best Wolfpack athletes will be tested against other ACC athletes from schools such as Virginia Tech, Clemson and Duke. Last year, the Pack found success at the event with first place finishes in the women's 300-meter and the men's long jump. Look for NC State track and field athletes to win multiple events during the back-half of the season.

Last April at the UVA Challenge, multiple NC State athletes set new personal records and had top-10 finishes, and Tuohy placed first in the 5000-meter after running a 15:14.61, a top-10 time in collegiate history for the 5000.

There will be meets every weekend leading up to ACC Indoor Championships taking place from Feb. 23-25 in Louisville, Kentucky.

The outdoor season will pick up from there, with ACC championships for outdoor taking place in early May, preceded by the NCAA Championships in late May and early June. While Bush and Tuohy are expected to do well, other athletes on the team are plenty capable of winning events for the Wolfpack this season

Quick check in on former pack runners in the professional ranks. JP Flavin and Graham Crawford competed in the Houston Half Marathon this morning.

Flavin has transitioned to the longer half and full marathon distances after graduating from NC State last spring, and lowered his Half Marathon PB today from 1:06:08 to 1:03:46. Really solid progression in less than a year of training for these distances.

Crawford is a 2017 graduate. Per his World Athletics page this was Crawford's first Half Marathon result, so his 1:03:52 time is really solid start to his step up to this distance.

They finished as the 11th and 12th americans in the field and 26th and 27th overall in the men's elite half marathon field.

NC State track and field traveled to compete in the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Virginia on Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14.

The Pack posted many strong finishes across the board, but the weekend was highlighted by graduate student Timara Chapman's school-record-breaking performance in the 500m. Her time of 1:15.58 earned her second place in the event.

Just over one second behind Chapman was senior Caroline Lewis in third place. Her time of 1:16.85 is a personal best and the third-best mark in NC State history. Lewis also competed in the 400m, taking eighth place and posting a time of 59.35 seconds.

Senior Ally Henson also moved up in the NC State record books this past weekend. Her time of 8.54 in the 60m hurdle final is tied for the sixth-fastest in Wolfpack history. Sophomore Jakerra Covington, senior Alexis Patterson and junior Imunique Archie also competed in the 60m hurdles, but none of them advanced past the prelims.

Beyond the sprinting events, the Pack continued to post impressive performances in the jumping events. Senior Jirah Sidberry took first place in both the long jump and triple jump. Her marks of 12.71 in the triple jump and 5.95m long jump rank fifth and eighth in NC State history, respectively.

Sophomore Zahra Bichara also competed in the long jump, leaping a distance of 5.49m to finish in 10th place. Covington rounded out the jumping performances on the women's side, recording a mark of 1.55m in the high jump to take eighth place.

On the men's side, freshman Kyzaiah Stone stole the show with a first place finish in the high jump. Stone's leap of 2.15m is tied for sixth-best in Wolfpack history and seventh in the nation right now.

Graduate student Jamar Davis and sophomore William Sistruck also competed in jumping events for the Pack. Davis leapt 15.25m to finish third in the triple jump while Sistruck leapt 6.86m to finish eighth in the long jump.

NC State also found success in the throwing events. In the women's weighted throw, junior Makayla Wright claimed third place with her mark of 19.05m. Junior Mahkayla Hart and sophomore Sydney Freeman also competed in the event, taking ninth and eleventh place, respectively.

In the men's weighted throw, freshman Nathan Lau took eighth place with his mark of 16.16m.

The Pack will return to Blacksburg next weekend to compete in the Hokie Invitational on Friday, Jan. 20 and Saturday, Jan. 21.

While most of the team was at the Virginia Tech Invitational, just noticed that a few of our Mid-distance Men went over to the Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge to open the indoor season with a mile run.

4th Zach Hughes - 4:13.17
5th Kyle Durham - 4:16.23
9th Wesley Larson - 4:20.11
11th Ryan Motondo - 4:23.00
12th Patrick Gibbons - 4:23.02

A few of them have faster PB's but considering its the opening of indoor season (and the first official collegiate race for a few of them) this is a solid start to the season.

I was looking forward to seeing a full lineup this weekend, but based on the initial entries posted it doesn't appear that quite everyone is running this weekend (though most are). Much like the women, some runners are not opening their season just yet, including Ian Shanklin, Hannes Burger, Robinson Snider & Dan McGoey. Most other runners are opening their season this weekend at the Hokie Invitational (if they didn't already last weekend).

Entries for the men are as follows (distance runners will very likely only race one race, sprinters probably no more than two)

60m - Isaiah Gadson, Alex Lang, Alexander Nunley, Henry Young

200m - Isaiah Gadson, Henry Young

400m - Alexander Nunley, Lance Patterson

600m - Kyle Durham, Wesley Larson,

800m - Zach Hughes, Wesley Larson

1000m - Zach Hughes, Jake Toomey (+ Gavin Gaynor unattached)

1 mile - Brett Gardner, Patrick Gibbons, Ian Harrison, Travis Koekemoer, Ryan Motondo

3000m - Ian Harrison, John Malach,

60m hurdles - Josh Brockman, Cameron Murray

4x400m relay - (Henry Young, Cameron Murray, Josh Brockman, Isaiah Gadson)\

Distance Medley Relay - (Kyle Durham, Zach Hughes, Jake Toomey, Travis Koekemoer)

High Jump - Kyzaiah Stone

Long Jump - Jamar Davis,

Triple Jump - Jirah Sidberry

Shot Put - Nathan Lau

Weight Throw - Nathan Lau

Day 1 is complete at the Hokie Invitational. Some great performances from some Pack runners. Notable results for the men's team below.

The running events opened with the Mile. Ian Harrison and Brett Gardner both ran new PB's with times of 4:01.09 and 4:01.33 respectively. These marks put them as the 3rd and 4th fastest at the event indoors in school history. Ryan Motondo and Patrick Gibbons also ran new collegiate PB's with times of 4:16.47 and 4:17.33 respectively., While these times may not be notable in terms of placements, they are ~6 second improvements for each runner over the time they opened the season with just 6 days ago. That is some very notable improvement that is a good sign for their future track development.

In the 1000m, Gavin Gaynor would have smashed the school record if he was not running unattached due to being out of indoors eligibility. His time of 2:21.19 was a massive PB. Since Gaynor's run won't count for the record books, the new school record will instead belong to Zach Hughes with his new PB of 2:23.28. Jake Toomey also finds himself now in 8th in the schools all time list after running his new PB of 2:25.87.

Next in the 60m Hurdles, Cameron Murray set a new school record, winning in a time of 7.67. Josh Brockman finished 2nd in 7.80, confirming him as 3rd fastest at the distance in school history.

In the 60m dash, Alex Lang ran a big new PB in the prelims with a time of 6.67. This makes him the 3rd fastest at the distance in school history. He did not run the finals for some reason. Henry Young also ran a new PB with a time of 6.89.

In the 600m, Kyle Durham finished just short of his PB and current school record with a time of 1:19.69. Wesley Larson ran a new PB of 1:23.23, making him the 8th fastest at the distance in school history.

In the 3000m, John Malach set a massive 12 second PB with a time of 8:19. 36.

Notable results in the field events for the men include the Long Jump.

Cameron Murray set a new PB with a jump of 7.54 meters to finish 2nd. Josh Brockman finished 3rd with a jump of 7.50 M. Jamar Davis finished 3rd with a jump of 7.47 meters. William Sistruck also set a new PB with his 6th place finish, jumping a distance of 7.15 meters.

cool tidbit for an incoming recruit next year for track and field. Tyson Adams of West Forsyth High School just set the all time North Carolina High School Indoor record for the Long Jump with a jump of 25 feet and 1.5 inches. Not only did this beat the previous record, it smashed it by a full 6 inches. Per NCPrepTrack.com, there are only 13 boys that have jumped longer than 24 feet in NC High School Indoor history, and he is the only one over 25 feet.

His mark would make him the 9th best at the event in NC State's school history indoors, and im not sure if he's even 18 years old yet. Really exciting future ahead of him.

The NC State track and field program put their talent on display on the first day of the Hokie Invitational, establishing three new school records.

DISTANCE

The Wolfpack opened action on day one of the Hokie Invitational in the women's mile. Senior Sydney Seymour finished fifth overall in the event with a time of 4:46.64, a new personal best. She was followed by her teammates Grace Hartman (4:48.24) and Brooke Rauber (4:50.88), who placed sixth and seventh in the event, respectively.

In the men's mile, the Pack saw two athletes finish in the top five. Ian Harrison finished third overall with a time of 4:01.09, which is now the fourth best mark in school history. NC State junior Brett Gardner recorded a new personal best with a time of 4:01.33, a mark that placed him fourth overall in the event and gives him the fifth-best mark in the history of the program.

Freshmen Ryan Motondo (4:16.47) and Patrick Gibbons (4:17.33) also participated in the event, both setting new personal bests.

Sam Bush earned a time of 2:45.39 in the women's 1000m, finishing fifth and recording the second best time in school history. She now holds the first and second-best times in program history for the event. Seymour finished ninth overall with a time of 2:51.28, which is good for sixth-best all-time at NC State.

Hartman also recorded a top-10 program mark with a time of 2:53.39, the eighth-best in school history.

Zach Hughes made history in the men's 1000m, producing a time of 2:23.28 (2:23.279) to claim the school record for the event. This mark is also good for a new personal best. Fellow sophomore Jake Toomey (2:25.87) also put his name in the record books, finishing with the fifth-best time ever recorded in the program, while also setting a new personal best.

Another record was broken in the women's 600m. Caroline Lewis recorded a personal best time of 1:34.73 to finish ninth in the event and claim the best time in school history.

In the men's 600m, Kyle Durham finished third with a time of 1:19.69, a mark that now sits at second-best all time at NC State, behind only his own record of 1:19.48, which he set last season.

John Malach posted a personal best time of 8:19.36 in the men's 3000m, a mark which earned him third place overall.

SPRINTS

Senior Ally Henson moved on to the women's 60m hurdle final after finishing sixth overall in the prelims with a time of 8.61. This time is now eighth-best in program history. She posted a time of 8.55 in the final to claim sixth place. This time is now tied with teammate Timara Chapman for the seventh-best mark all-time for the program.

In the men's 60m hurdle prelim, NC State saw a pair of seniors advance to the final with top-10 program finishes. Cameron Murray placed first with a time of 7.75, a mark which now sits at third best in school history. Josh Brockman set a personal best with a time of 7.80 to claim second place, which is now fourth all-time at NC State.

Murray wasn't done entering his name into the record books, as he broke a school record while also finishing first in the men's 60m hurdle finals with a new personal best time of 7.67. He now holds the top three times in Wolfpack history for the event and is responsible for four of the 10 best all-time marks in the program. His time of 7.67 is good for the best time in the nation. Brockman posted another 7.80 time to tie his new personal best and finish second in the final.

Imunique Archie (7.789) and Chapman (7.86) each set a personal best in the women's 60m prelims.

On the men's side of the 60m prelims, Alex Lang advanced to the final and set a new personal best while finishing third overall with a time of 6.67. This is now good for the fourth-best all-time program mark. Sophomore Alexander Nunley placed 10th overall with a time of 6.876.

Henry Young also participated in the event and set a new personal best time of 6.89.

More personal bests were set in the Women's 300m final as Archie (42.24) and Allison Payton (42.34) each recorded new career-best marks.

JUMPS

The Pack saw three athletes earn top-10 finishes in the women's long jump. Jirah Sidberry recorded a season best jump of 5.98m (19'7.50") to finish fourth overall. This jump is also good for the ninth-best in school history. Timara Chapman earned fifth place with a new personal best jump of 5.91m (19'4.75"), while Zahra Bichara set a new personal best with a jump of 5.90m (19'4.25") and claimed sixth.

In the men's long jump, Cameron Murray set a new personal best while also claiming second place with a jump of 7.54m (24'9.0"). Josh Brockman came in third with a mark of 7.50m (24'7.25) and Jamar Davis earned fourth overall with a jump of 7.50m (24'6.25").

Sophomore William Sistruck also participated in the event for the Wolfpack, receiving seventh place and setting a new personal best of 7.15m (23'5.50").

THROWS

Mahkayla Hart claimed sixth place in the women's weight throw with a best throw of 16.91m (55'5.75"). Fellow sophomore Makala Wright recorded a best throw of 16.85m (55'3.50"), which was good for eighth overall.

Thought it would be a good time to give a midyear check in on how the men's incoming recruits for fall 2023 are doing so far through XC (for the distance runners) and early part of Indoor Track. Looking at results it looks like there's a mix of talent coming in across a few disciplines. Some people in this class with some really solid potential. Recruiting is a bit more fluid in Track and field since there's only so many scholarships available, so many of the athletes are going to be preferred walkons. So while its not very likely the people already known to be committed will change, there's a good chance we'll be adding a few more people in the coming months, particularly in the sprints, jumps and throws.

Tyson Adams - West Forsyth High School Clemmons, NC - Adams is a national class elite jumper and a really good short sprinter on top of that. He just smashed the North Carolina all time state record in the Indoor Long Jump with a jump of 25'1.5", which is also the current top distance nationally. He also has jumped the 6th farthest Triple Jump in NC this year, with a jump of 43'10.5". Adams is also 4th in the state and 17th in the country with a time of 6.42s in the 55m dash. He is 4th in the state in the 200m dash with a time of 22.52. Adams is also 20th in the state in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.01.

Marco Evans - Cary High School, Cary, NC - A really well rounded distance runner with a ton of potential. He finished 6th at the NC 4A XC Championships, as well as 16th in the Nike Team Cross Nationals South Regional. He ran a 15:21 which was the 9th fastest time in NC this year across all classifications. Early this indoor season, he already has the 4th fastest Mile time in NC and 32nd fastest nationally with a 4:20.11. He also has the 3rd fastest 2 mile in NC and 14th fastest nationally with a 9:20.62.

Krister Sjoblad - Athens Drive High School Raleigh, NC - Sjoblad is a very talented distance runner. He had a disappointing ending to his XC Campaign finishing 26th at the NC 4A state meet, and 133rd at the Nike Team Cross Nationals South Regional. But prior to those disappointing times, he had run a 15:07.1 which was the 3rd fastest time by anyone in NC this year. In Indoors so far, he as gotten off to a hot start, posting the 9th fastest mile time in NC So far with a 4:23.21 and the 5th fastest 2 mile in NC with a 9:23.95.

Elliott McArthur - Saint Paul, MN - A really solid distance runner. He to a lesser extent to Sjoblad, had a disappointing finish to his XC Season. He finished 14th at the MN AAA State Championship before finishing 49th at the Nike Team Cross Nationals Heartland Regional. His run of 15:21 from earlier in the year was the 7th fastest time among all classifications of MN boys. He has not opened his indoor season yet, but he ran the fastest 800m indoors in MN last year with a 1:56.13 (81st fastest nationally).

Quentin Clarke - a bit more of a project as a sprinter. so far this indoor season he has run a 6.72s in the 55m dash and 35.64s in the 300m which is the 20th fastest time in NC.

After a record-breaking performance that catapulted him to No. 1 in the nation, NC State's Cameron Murray has been named the ACC Indoor Track Performer of the Week.

Murray, a graduate student from Atlanta, set the school record in the 60M hurdles over the weekend at the Hokie Invitational. His time of 7.6 is a new school record, but also the No. 1 mark in the nation.

He also finished second in the long jump (24'9").

Murray is a four-time NCAA East Regional qualifier in the 110m hurdles, the 110m hurdles, the long jump and the 4x100 relay for outdoor track. He is a three-time All-ACC performer in the 110 hurdles as well as the 60m hurdles (indoor)

Don't know if you know who updates the lists, but i noticed that the T & F record books got updated on Gopack and i think they got pretty much everything from this season so far but they missed Brett Gardner 13:48.77 in the 5000 at the BU Indoor meet in early december which would put him 5th in the top 10 section.

The NC State track and field program opened competition on the first day of the Bob Pollock Invitational with four athletes setting new personal-best marks.

MULTI-EVENTS

In the women's pentathlon, Timara Chapman recorded a top-three finish in each of the five events, totaling 4005 points for second place. Her mark of 4005 points is now the eighth-best in the country.

After winning the 800m with a time of 2:20.33, the graduate student tied a career-best in the high jump with a 1.70m (5'7.00") leap, earning her second place in the event. She also finished second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.74.

SPRINTS

In the 60m prelims, senior Alex Lang finished second with a time of 6.70 to advance to the final while Cameron Murray finished eighth, setting a new personal best of 6.76.

In the final of the 60m, Lang recorded a new personal best time of 6.61 to win the event. His new time is tied for third-best all-time at NC State and tied for eighth-best in the nation.

Murray beat his personal best in the 60m for the second time in one day, recording a time of 6.74 (6.740) to take fifth place in the final and tie the fifth-best mark in school history for the event.

Senior Josh Brockman finished second in the men's 60m hurdle prelims with a new personal best time of 7.69 - a time that ranks second in Wolfpack history and is tied for third mark in the country. He finished third in the finals at 7.72.

THROWS

In the women's weight throw, Mahkayla Hart earned 10th place with a new personal best of 18.13m (59'5.75"). This ranks seventh all-time at NC State.

JUMPS

Wolfpack sophomore Zahra Bichara earned fifth place and a new personal best of 5.94m (19'6.00") in the women's long jump - the eighth-best jump in program history for the event.

That BU track is unreal. So many crazy fast times getting run there.

The 8 sub 4 guys from Washington included a new world leader 3:51 by Joe Waskom. 3:54 was the ncaa indoor record up until 2013. Now guys pretty much need to run that to make it to nationals.

Over the last 10-15 years, America finally learned how to run. Maybe it's magic tracks and shoes, but damn... High schoolers breaking 4 in the mile is barely newsworthy anymore.

Yeah for sure. It really warps my mind as to what should be considered a good time too. I see guys like Ian Harrison and Brett Gardner running 4:01 or 4:02 in the middle of January and my initial reaction is to just think "meh" before I have to stop myself. That's still a really freaking fast time.

After a crazy weekend of records being broken and fast times being run across the the country, i was checking the updated rankings for Indoor Nationals Qualifying and thought i'd give an update on where NC State athletes stand right now (with about a month and 1-2 more fast meets still to go), and more importantly where the qualifying standard stands for the athletes that are just gearing up for future events to qualify.

Indoors does not have Regional meets like Outdoors does so qualifying is purely based on times run during the indoor season (Dec 1 - Feb 26). The top 16 athletes qualify for each individual race and the top 12 relay teams qualify. Tiebreakers are applied so that they dont go over the 16 or 12 limit.

If the season ended today, these are the athletes that would qualify on the Men's side, and what the 16th place standard currently is compared to what it took last season:

60M - Alex Lang is currently the t-9th qualifier with a time of 6.61 seconds. Standard is currently at 6.63 seconds. Last season it took a time of 6.61 seconds to qualify so we'll have to see if Lang is safe just yet. Cameron Murray may also have an outside shot with a 6.74 this season.

200M - Standard currently set at 20.80 seconds. Last season it took a time of 20.73 seconds to qualify. Pretty unlikely we have anyone qualify in this event. Henry Young has our best indoor performance with a 21.73, though he does have a 21.50 PB Indoors.

400M - Standard currently set at 46.43 seconds. Last season it took 46.16 seconds to qualify. Highly unlikely we have anyone qualify in this event. Our best 400 time this season is Lance Patterson with a 50.12, though Alexander Nunley has run a 300M time that would convert to a 48.3 400m time.

800M - Standard currently set at 1:48.16. Last season it took 1:47.66 to qualify. We have a few solid 800M runners who have PB's around 1:49/1:50 but i dont believe any of them have ever broken 1:51 indoors. Though Zach Hughes did run a 1000M school record that would conver to a 1:48.4 800m.

1 Mile - Standard currently set at 3:57.45. Last season it took a 3:55.89 to qualify. Highly unlikely we have anyone qualify in this event. Ian Harrison and Brett Gardner have both run 4:01 this season, and Ian Shanklin has a 1500m PB that would convert to a 4:00/4:01 but nothing that says anyone is likely to run a 3:55 this season.

3000M -Standard currently set at 7:51.36. Last season it took a 7:45.80 to qualify. Highly unlikely we have anyone qualify in this event. But i will be interested to see what Ian Shanklin and Brett Gardner run in a fast 3000m this coming weekend. Shanklin, Gardner and Ian Harrison have all run PB's or converted equivalents between 8:00 and 8:05, but all 3 have other results this XC or track season to suggest they could be faster than that now if they get in the right race.

5000M - quick note, 46 of the top 50 times in the NCAA this year are still from that Dec 3rd meet at Boston. Of the 4 that aren't, they were run this past weekend at the same Boston track. What an absurdly fast track that is. Standard currently is at 13:33.15. Last season it took a 13:26.44 to qualify. Ian Shanklin has a 13:23 PB from outdoors 2 years ago, but his indoors PB is only 13:48. In the right race maybe he could run another time in the 13:20's and give himself a chance.

60M Hurdles - Cameron Murray and Josh Brockman both look safe to qualify currently with times of 7.67 (2nd in nation) and 7.69 (t-5th in nation) respectively. Standard currently set at 7.73 seconds. Last season it took an 7.72 to qualify.

4x400M - Standard currently set at 3:05.91. Last season it took a 3:05.21 to qualify. Probably the longest shot we are to qualify at any event other than the Pole Vault where we have Pole Vaulters on the roster. For perspective our School Record indoors in this event is 3:44.51. We haven't run a time faster than 3:15 since 2018.

DMR - Standard currently set at 9:45.51, which is the NC State men. However last season it took 9:24.56 to qualify. So the time is not safe by any stretch and even though they are in right now, they are unlikely to qualify.

High Jump - Standard currently set at 7' 1". Last season it took 7' 2.5" to qualify. Kyzaiah Stone is currently 17th in the country with a jump of 7' 0.5". He is obviously very competitive to qualify.

Pole Vault - We do not compete anyone in this event.

Long Jump - Standard currently set at 25' 6.25". Last season it took 25' 8" to qualify. Cameron Murray has a PB of 25' 7.5" which would be very competitive, but it is from Outdoors. His best this season Indoors is 24' 9".

Triple Jump - Standard currently set at 51' 8.5". Last season it took 52' 10.75" to qualify. Pretty unlikely to qualify in this event. Jamar Davis has a best of 52' 6.5" but it is from outdoors. He has yet to break 51' indoors.

Shot Put - Standard currently set at 63' 6". Last season it took 64' 2.5" to qualify. We are not competitive in this event. Nathan Lau has our best throw this year of 47' 9.25"

Weight Throw - Standard currently set at 71' 8.25". Last season it took 71' 10.75" to qualify. We are not competitive in this event either. Nathan Lau has our best throw this year of 53' 0.25".

Heptathlon- We are unlikely to compete anyone in this event.

Elite fields currently announced for this weekend's Camel City Invite. Entries can continue through tonight so it may not be finalized until tomorrow.

On the Men's side we have 4 men registered in the 3000 elite field, Ian Shanklin and David Vorbach opening their seasons along with Brett Gardner and Ian Harrison running their first 3000m of the year. Nobody currently listed in either the Mile or 800.

The other non-elite fields are not release yet, but last year NC State only brought a handful of field athletes along with the distance runners who were running the elite fields.
