The 2021 NC State women's cross country national championship team was honored by Governor Roy Cooper on Wednesday.

The team took the short trip from campus to the governor's mansion to witness Cooper sign a proclamation, presenting them with their national championship road signs to be placed across Wake County.

"People who have been here with me know how much I love team sports," Cooper said. "When you do get a chance to grab that ring and become number one across the board, that is a special moment and should be celebrated."

Last season in Tallahassee, the Wolfpack captured their first national title, totaling 84 points to bring home the championship.

Kelsey Chmiel led NC State, finishing in sixth place with a time of 19:34.6, the ACC highest finisher. Chmiel was one of a school-record five All-Americans following the championships.

Katelyn Tuohy, Allie Hays, Hannah Steelman and Sam Bush were also named All Americans.

Chmiel was named the ACC 2021 Cross Country Runner of the Year. Chmiel also earned All-Region and All-America honors.

Head coach Laurie Henes was named ACC Coach of the Year. Henes was also named the USTFCCCA National Coach of the Year and USTFCCCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year.

"Two things we talked about in this program are gratitude and opportunity," Henes said. "We want our athletes to find something and someone to be grateful for everyday and to be prepared to take advantage of any opportunity presented to them. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with these young women everyday."

The 2022 cross country team is coming off an ACC championship win in Charlottesville, Va. last weekend. It was the seventh straight ACC title (a school record) for the Wolfpack.

"One of the things this team does amazingly well," Henes said, "In a sport that seems so individual, like cross country, they have really embraced working hard together. They go after their goals as teammates for a purpose bigger than themselves and I think that's one of the things that's allowed them to be so successful over the years."

Cooper also congratulated the team on their collective grade point average of 3.75.
"That, at the end of the day, is what you are going to need to succeed," Cooper said. "This also shows you that you can be good at a number of things and that even when you're good at sports, it's important to remember your academics."

Members of the NC State team head to Louisville, KY. Next week for the NCAA regionals
