NC State redshirt junior Trent Hidlay will represent the United States at the U23 World Championships this weekend in Pontevedra, Spain.

Hidlay (86 kg) earned a spot on the U.S. World team roster after a first-place finish at the U23 World Team Trials.

The Lewiston, Pa. native went a perfect 7-0 during the trials, outscoring his opponents 76-11. The three-time All-American will begin competition at the World Championships on Saturday, October 22 at 4:30 am ET.

"I think one of his ultimate goals is to win a world championship," Wolfpack wrestling coach Pat Popolizio said. "With his training that he's been able to put in the last couple of years, obviously it's put him in position for this. This is one step closer to the senior level goals that he has."

Hidlay has experience on the big stage. He finished second in the 2021 U.S. Senior Nationals and won a bronze medal at the 2019 U20 World Championships. In 2021, Hidlay was the NCAA runner-up.

"I think it (previous finish) shifted his mindset more, that he is one of the best guys in the world," Popolizio said. "He wants to bring home that gold medal. The experience he got with that international trip is extremely valuable."

Hidlay is a two-time ACC champion (2021, 2022) at NC State and was named the 2020 ACC Freshman of the Year. Hidlay joins his older brother, Hayden (2018), Sean Fausz (2018) and Nick Gwiazdowski (2017, 2018, 2019, 2021) as Wolfpack wrestlers who earned a spot on the US World team.

"That's what we've been working towards," Popolizio said. "To get guys on the national scene in college and then put them on the world scene when they are with us or after college. Historically we've been able to do that year in and year out. To keep things moving forward I think it's a statement to everyone involved in the program."
