The Wolfpack was unstoppable Friday morning as it cruised past Florida A&M in straight sets (25-16, 25-18, 25-17) to open the season at the K-State Invitational.

NC State finished the morning doubling the amount of kills as the Rattlers (40-23) and limiting them to a .000 hitting percentage.

Junior Amanda Rice led the Pack as she tied her career high 12 kills. She tallied 13.5 points and six digs in the season opener.

Freshman Ava Brizard also recorded 12 kills and added 13 points in her collegiate debut for the Wolfpack.

Junior setter Naomi Cabello made her debut in the red and white with a .667 hitting percentage and 27 assists.

Set One (25-16)
The Pack controlled momentum from the beginning as they tallied three straight points to start the morning. Rice tallied six kills, including four straight to help maintain the momentum. Florida A&M tallied 15 errors in the first set, allowing the Pack to go on multiple scoring streaks.

Set Two (25-18)
The Rattlers took an early lead and the game tied seven times before the Pack took over the lead, 12-11, and never looked back. Sophomore Jada Allen tallied two solo blocks to help push the Pack to the win.

Set Three (25-17)
NC State took an early lead, but Florida A&M quickly tied the game, 9-9, after a service error. Brizard recorded five of her 12 kills in match three alone. She recorded the match winning kill after a set from Cabello.

The NC State volleyball team fell to Kansas State in four sets (27-25, 14-25, 17-25, 18-25) Friday evening in its second match at the K-State Invitational.

Senior setter Kristen McDaniel tallied three kills which made an impact for the Pack and finished with a .750 hitting percentage. She also recorded 31 assists.

Graduate libero Priscilla Hernandez recorded 21 digs for the Wolfpack and two service aces.

Set One (27-25):

Set Two (25-14):
NC State struggled to get into a rhythm. Allen ended K-State's biggest scoring run with a kill. Freshman outside hitter Courtney Bryant recorded her collegiate debut and tallied two kills. Head coach Luka Slabe challenged a point awarded to the Wildcats and won after it was found they had a touch.

Set Three (25-17):
The two teams battled back and forth to start the third set. The Pack tallied three straight points with Amanda Rice behind the service line and took a 6-5 lead. After battling back and forth, K-State took the set. NC State held the Wildcats to a 0.081 hitting percentage.

NC State grabs second win against Sam Houston, wraps up K-State Invitational

https://www.technicianonline.com/sports/nc-state-grabs-second-win-against-sam-houston-wraps-up-k-state-invitational/article_80892390-2637-11ed-ae23-9b02b64457e8.html

The NC State volleyball team defeated the Sam Houston Bearkats in five sets, two of them requiring extra points. The Pack succeeded in the K-State Invitational with two wins and one loss.

The Wolfpack alternated wins and losses in the first four sets, dropping the first 27-25, then winning 25-23, followed by another 27-25 loss and won the fourth 25-19. The Pack won the match in another close set, 15-13.

Both teams nearly matched in kills, with State barely holding a 63-61 lead. The teams were also almost identical in attack errors with NC State at 31 and Sam Houston at 30. However, the Pack had double the amount of service aces as the Bearkats with 12.

Senior defensive specialist Hannah Wander notched five of those aces, giving the Wolfpack that small edge to win the match. She played in all five sets and contributed 10 digs as well.

Freshman outside hitter Ava Brizard had the most amount of kills on the team with 20. She also tallied four blocks and eight digs in an all-around solid performance.

Sophomore middle blocker Jada Allen saw five sets of action as well, tallying 14 kills in the match. This double-digit performance was higher than both of her totals the previous day, so she will likely see more action because of it.

The two-day K-State Invitational results in two wins and one loss for the Pack. It will travel home on Sept. 2 to play Colgate in Reynolds Coliseum. The home opener will begin at 7 p.m.

Brizard recorded a career high 20 kills, 4 block assists, and 23 points.

Sophomore Jada Allen added 14 kills and five block assists to the book.

Senior defensive specialist Hannah Wander recorded a career high five service aces against Sam Houston.

Set One (25-27):

Set Three (25-27):
Sam Houston took a two point lead to start the set, but the Pack quickly shut it down. After a service ace, a kill and multiple attacking errors by the Bearkats, NC State took a 6-3 lead. The rest of the set made for a back and forth battle. Allen recorded back to back kills to make it 24-23, NC State lead. Sam Houston won the set after a service error and kill by Catherine Krieger.

Set Four (25-19):
The set was a back and forth battle, with neither team leading by more than three. Williams recorded a kill and senior Hannah Wander added her fifth ace to the day to give NC State a 21-20 lead. An attacking error by the Bearkats Krieger ended the set and allowed the Pack to tie the match, 2-2.

Set Five (15-13):
Similar to set three and four, the set was back and forth. NC State took a 14-10 lead, but Sam Houston scored three straight points in attempts to shut down the Pack. With the match point on the line, Brizard added to her career day by recording the game winning kill.

NC State volleyball beats Elon, falls to Tennessee in doubleheader

The NC State volleyball team beat Elon 3-1 but fell to Tennessee 3-0 in the Wolfpack's first home doubleheader of the 2022 season on Saturday, Sept. 3.

After cruising past Elon (1-5) in the early match for its fourth win of the season, NC State (4-2) fell to Tennessee (3-3). Despite its 3-0 scoreline, the match against the Volunteers was competitive through and through, largely due to sophomore opposite hitter Amanda Rice's amazing 17-kill performance.

Elon

Despite losing the first set 25-21, NC State won three straight sets to send the Phoenix back home in the first match of the day.

Freshman outside hitter Ava Brizard, redshirt sophomore outside hitter Madison Williams and Rice immediately stood out for the Pack in the early match both on the court and in the stats as the trio ended up in a three-way tie for most kills with 12. With all three making plays in every set, it's safe to say they made the difference for the Pack against Elon.

Brizard and Williams made crucial kills at the end of the second set to tie the match at 1-1. Two kills from Brizard increased the Pack's lead to 10 as Williams followed up her teammate's kills with one of her own, putting NC State in position to clinch the set.

After winning the second set 25-15, the Wolfpack continued to rely on Williams and Brizard for the remainder of the match. Meanwhile, Rice also played a big role in the third set as she made two kills early on, helping the Pack gain the lead in what ended up as a close 25-23 win.

Up 2-1 in the fourth set, NC State put the game away thanks to more clutch end-of-set plays by Brizard and Williams. Shortly after Williams scored two straight points to put the Pack up 24-19, Brizard put the match away with a kill, winning the set 25-20 and clinching the match 3-1 for NC State.

But while Rice, Brizard and Williams stood out against Elon, it was Rice that stole the show against the Volunteers in the latter match.

Tennessee

Compared to the first match against Elon, the Wolfpack didn't fare nearly as well against the Volunteers, losing in three straight, closely contested sets. After losing each of the first two sets 25-22, the Wolfpack almost came away with a win in the third set, but the Volunteers prevailed 27-25 to complete the sweep.

For the duration of each set, NC State managed to trade points with Tennessee but couldn't find a way to command the contest and hold onto its lead. Despite short bursts of energy, the Wolfpack ultimately struggled to gain momentum throughout the match. Head coach Luka Slabe commented on the Wolfpack's inability to perform well consistently throughout the entire weekend.

"Regardless of who was on the other side of the net, we struggled," Slabe said. "We were battling uphill for all three sets".

After narrowly losing the first two sets, the Pack's loss in the third set was as close as it gets. With each team trading points all set long, extra points were needed for Tennessee to come away with the win. The Pack was able to position itself on the verge of victory, but couldn't conjure points at the end of sets when it counted the most.
