NC State volleyball lit up Reynolds Coliseum on Sunday afternoon in an intense match against the Miami Hurricanes. The win comes off a clean sweep of the Florida State Seminoles in three sets on Friday, Sept. 30.

The Hurricanes (9-6, 2-2) took the momentum early on, but the Wolfpack (9-6, 3-1) was able to rally behind a service ace from freshman outside hitter Ava Brizard to cut the Miami lead to two at 7-5. This set was filled with long rallies on both sides of the net, but NC State out-hit Miami 13 kills to nine. A double block from sophomore middle blocker Jada Allen and Brizard tied the score 11-11 and allowed for State to take its first lead of the game soon after at 12-11. The set ended 25-20 with graduate opposite hitter Vanja Bukilic leading the team with four kills.

"It was just a great team win," Brizard said. "We knew coming in that Miami was going to play tough, and we knew it was gonna be a big game for [graduate libero Priscilla Hernandez]. Coming off a great win against Florida State, we just wanted to keep that momentum going."

The second set was much like the first with a slow start from the Wolfpack, but two service aces by senior defensive specialist Hannah Wander brought the momentum back to NC State. Allen would get her second of three block assists of the match, along with a kill. State won the set again by 25-20, only to fall to the Hurricanes 25-20 in the third set.

"We have to be absolutely happy and proud of our team and the way they pushed through," said head coach Luka Slabe. "Not killing the ball, it's so frustrating, and that creeps in your mind and everyone's mind, and I think we're slowly overcoming that hump."

The third set didn't see as much Wolfpack momentum as the previous two sets did, as Miami took the lead quickly and would not let go. The Wolfpack did defend well, as the team tallied 20 digs off of Miami hits in the set, and Hernandez led the Wolfpack with 20 digs herself by the end of the match. This defensive dominance followed the Pack into the fourth set, where it paired defense with kills to win the set and match. Senior setter Kristen McDaniel totalled 23 assists, the most for the team, and junior setter Naomi Cabello followed close behind with 19.

"We just want to play our game," Brizard said. "No matter what opponent we're playing, we're gonna play the best that we can. We just take it one day at a time, working on stuff we need to clean up, and the results will come."

The Wolfpack hits the road for its next two games, traveling to Blacksburg, Virginia to take on Virginia Tech on Friday, Oct. 7th at 6 p.m.

Ava Brizard, Vanja Bukilic, and Amanda Rice led the Pack with 15 kills each as they took down Miami 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 25-21) Sunday afternoon on Reynolds.

For the first time since 2016, the Pack defeated both Florida State and Miami in the same season. The two wins were also the first against both opponents under head coach Luka Slabe.

Senior setter Kristen McDaniel tallied 23 assists on the afternoon.

Graduate libero Priscilla Hernandez recorded 20 digs against her former team.

Set One (25-20)
The Hurricanes took the early lead, but the Pack managed to tie the set, 11-11. NC State took four straight points after kills from Bukilic and Martyna Leoniak to take a 23-17 lead. Miami scored three more times before NC State took the final two points of the set.

Set Two (25-20)
Miami started with the lead once again, but the Pack found its momentum and came out on top. Rice led the team with six kills, while McDaniel added 12 assists and Naomi Cabello added 10 assists.

Set Three (20-25)
Miami took a 8-5 lead and the Pack struggled to maintain the momentum from the first two sets. At one point, the Hurricanes held a 21-14 lead over the Wolfpack. Errors by Miami and kills by the Pack allowed NC State to make it 19-24. A service ace by Leoniak stopped the Canes from scoring match point and made the set 20-24, but Miami scored the next point to take the set.

Set Four (25-21)
Miami started with the lead, but NC State kept the set close. After a back and forth battle, the two teams tied the set on 10 different occasions. The Wolfpack took six straight points to end the set and take the match 3-1. Brizard recorded six kills to help the Pack in the fourth set.

The NC State volleyball team fell to Wake Forest, 3-1, after a long battle Sunday evening.

Freshman Ava Brizard recorded her fourth career double-double after tallying 12 kills and 13 digs.

Martyna Leoniak set a new career high with 15 kills and added seven digs to the books.

Sophomore Jada Allen recorded eight blocks for the Pack, in addition to six kills.

Set One (23-25)
The strength was in the Pack to start. NC State took five straight points, four of which started with Leoniak behind the service line. The Demon Deacons took its first lead of the set, 12-10, after an error by the Pack and a block. The two teams battled back and forth the rest of the set. Wake Forest managed to maintain the lead. After tying the set eight different times, the Demon Deacons came out on top.

Set Two (24-26)
It was a battle from the first serve Wake Forest would lead by one, NC State would tie it up right after. The Pack took its first lead of the set, 10-9. The Pack maintained the lead despite the Demon Deacons efforts to stop them. It wasn't until NC State recorded an error on a serve from the Deacons that Wake Forest took the lead, 23-22.

Set Three (25-22)
The back and forth battle continued into the third set. After Wake Forest took a 17-14 lead, the Pack had enough and went on an 8-3 scoring run. Leoniak and Amanda Rice dominated for the Pack and helped secure the third set to keep the match going.

Set Four (18-25)
The Pack struggled to maintain momentum in the fourth set, but continued to battle. Wake Forest went on a 7-3 scoring run to stop the Wolfpack and take the fourth set.

NC State women's volleyball team swept the Syracuse Orange in three straight sets on Friday, Oct. 14th in Reynolds Coliseum.

The Wolfpack (11-7, 5-2 ACC) dominated the majority of the match after coming off a tough loss to conference rival Wake Forest on Sunday, Oct. 9, while Syracuse (8-9, 4-3 ACC) extended its losing streak to three games. It was a close first set with both teams trading points back and forth, but State showed up and took the momentum in the second and third sets to complete the clean sweep.

"We've been working on driving into balls and making sure we're not fearing the volleyball," said graduate libero Priscilla Hernandez.

This confident attitude was certainly on display tonight as the Wolfpack dictated most of the game while Syracuse fought to stay above water.

NC State came out swinging in the first set, building its momentum from the very first point of the game, a kill by sophomore outside hitter Martyna Leoniak. High energy from both teams led to multiple longer rallies throughout the set in which both teams made impressive plays. A string of sloppy plays from the red-and-white allowed the Orange to cut the lead to two, but ultimately the Pack carved out the set victory, 25-22.

The Wolfpack looked a little rattled starting the second set as Syracuse took a 4-1 lead. This lead was short-lived though, with the Pack rallying behind Hernandez's second service ace of the match to knot things up at 5-5. From there it was all Wolfpack, who took the set with a dominating 25-16 score.

"Syracuse is statistically one of the best, fastest serve receiving teams in the ACC," said head coach Luka Slabe. "If not the best, I would have to go check [their stats] out. … So we kept them way below their average, and that helps."

The third and final set was once again a show of Wolfpack power. Junior setter Naomi Cabello tallied her second service ace of the match; State finished the game with six total.

As State slowly built its lead, many members of the red-and-white showed off their skills. By the end of the match, six NC State players notched five or more kills, with freshman outside hitter Ava Brizard leading the team with 10. Sophomore middle blocker Jada Allen led the team with five blocks, followed closely by graduate opposite hitter Vanja Bukilic and sophomore opposite hitter Amanda Rice with four.

The Wolfpack will stay at home for its next match against the Boston College Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum.

The NC State volleyball team lost in five grueling sets to the Boston College Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 16 in Reynolds Coliseum.

The Wolfpack (11-8, 5-3 ACC) couldn't silence the visiting Eagles (14-8, 2-6 ACC), who snapped a five-game losing streak with this win. NC State looked perfect in the first set, but after falling victim to some great plays from across the net, the Pack dropped the second and third set. It came back with a win in the fourth, but eventually lost in the fifth and final set.

The game started optimistically for the Pack as it opened the scoring off a kill from graduate opposite hitter Vanja Bukilic. High energy on the Wolfpack's side of the net got the team going, closing the first set with a dominating score of 25-13. The team totaled 14 kills this set, the majority coming from freshman outside hitter Ava Brizard.

"[Boston College] did a good job, they pushed us and pushed us to a very, very uncomfortable zone after set one," said head coach Luka Slabe. "We managed everything really well, played good volleyball. Then they started pushing us with their serve, and therefore we were a little bit in trouble."

Whatever momentum the Pack was feeling in the first set was nowhere to be found in the second and third sets. Boston College took a quick 5-1 lead early in the second set and State did not reciprocate the energy. The third set saw nine scoring ties between the teams, but once again the Eagles rebuilt momentum and took a 2-1 lead.

Sophomore outside hitter Martyna Leoniak was the Wolfpack's shining star during this slow period as she maxed out with a hitting percentage of .833 and was a tough defensive player blocking at the net. During the second set, senior setter Kristin McDaniel recorded her 2,000th career assist.

"It's my first season with Kristen she's very supportive," Leoniak said. "She's a great girl. She's working hard and I'm so happy for her, and I just want to work more and more with her and see the results."

The fourth set was another tough battle between both teams as they traded points back and forth. Graduate libero Priscilla Hernandez recorded an ace, joining freshman middle blocker Lily Cropper, who finished the match with two service aces, in the box score. With the match on the line, an important call from the referees was overturned, giving the set to State and tying the match at 2-2.

"When you have a hard time killing the ball in both zones, then it's hard to win," Slabe said. "...It's just this weird combo, a perfect storm of struggle that we still have a hard time overcoming."

The fifth and final set was electrifying from the start, with the Wolfpack taking command of the court, but Boston College came from behind multiple times. The Eagles outpaced the Wolfpack 10-7 in kills to win the set and the match.

NC State will hit the road this week as it heads up to Durham, North Carolina to play rival Duke on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 8 p.m.

The NC State volleyball team fell to Duke 3-1 Wednesday evening for a mid-week match in Durham.

Freshman Ava Brizard led the Pack with 15 kills.

Senior setter Kristen McDaniel totaled 22 assists on the evening.

Vanja Bukilic and Jada Allen both tallied six blocks for the Pack.

Set One (23-25)
The Blue Devils took a 4-0 lead to start, forcing head coach Luka Slabe to take an early timeout. The Pack went on to take five straight points to end Duke's lead. The set became a close battle for the in-state rivals and Duke eventually took back the lead. NC State continued to battle and capitalize on errors made by the Blue Devils. Duke brought the set to match point with the Pack trailing by four, but NC State wasn't done and rallied back to trail by one. Duke ended up taking the set after the Pack had a block go out of bounce.

Set Two (25-22)
The Pack went on a 4-0 run to start the set. Duke minimized the Pack's lead to one, causing Slabe to take a timeout, but NC State came out of the timeout to take two straight points. Duke managed to tie the match at ten all, but recorded a service error on the next point to allow the Pack to lead once again. Brizard recorded four kills for the Pack and ended the set after an assist from McDaniel.

Set Three (17-25)
Like set two, the Pack started off with a 5-1 lead. The Blue Devils were unable to take over until the 11th point, where they challenged for a touch and won. The Pack struggled to regain the lead and trailed by seven on set point Duke.

Set Four (18-25)
The Wolfpack struggled to gain momentum. Duke went on a five point scoring-run that aided in its efforts to control the set. The Pack minimized the Blue Devils lead to one, 19-18, but ended up falling short.

NC State volleyball (11-10, 5-5) fell to North Carolina (12-8, 4-5) in three sets on Friday night at Reynolds Coliseum.

Vanja Bukilic led the way for the Wolfpack with 13 kills, while Kristen McDaniel aided the offensive effort with 14 assists.

Defensively, Jada Allen posted three blocks.

The night was highlighted by a pregame ceremony highlighting McDaniel reaching 2,000 assists in her collegiate career, a mark she reached on October 16 against Boston College.

Set One (24-26)
After surrendering a 4-1 run to the Tar Heels to start the evening, the Pack fought through a tightly-contested set that resulted in NC State taking a late 18-17 lead after a block from Martyna Leoniak. After a run from North Carolina knotted the score at 22 later in the set, the Pack picked up back-to-back points to gain a 24-22 edge and multiple set points. A four-point swing from the Tar Heels was enough to capture the set, nonetheless at 26-24.

Set Two (17-25)
The penultimate set saw the Tar Heels add two four-point runs to answer NC State's early lead. After the Wolfpack led by as many as three points in the opening portion of the set, North Carolina grabbed its first lead since the opening point at 12-11. The Tar Heels proceeded to outscore the Pack 13-6 over the next 19 points, closing out the set 25-17.

Set Three (18-25)
NC State responded to a fast start from North Carolina in the final set by making up a six-point deficit after falling behind 11-5. Back-to-back kills from Bukilic tied the score at 11, only for the Tar Heels to counter with a four-point run of their own, after which they never trailed. North Carolina closed out the 3-0 contest on a six-point run.

Next Up
The Pack will now shift its focus to a stretch of back-to-back home games in Reynolds Coliseum against ACC foes Clemson and Georgia Tech. The fans came for a party, but the concert just wasn't that good.
That about sums up the night for the NC State volleyball team as it got swept by the North Carolina Tar Heels in front of a packed house in Reynolds Coliseum.
Perhaps the most pivotal moment of the match came at the end of the first set, when the Wolfpack (11-10, 5-5 ACC) held a 24-22 lead with two set points opportunities, but the Tar Heels (12-8, 4-5 ACC) scored four straight points out of a timeout, stealing the set right from under the Pack's nose. Afterwards, Carolina didn't look back, winning the second and third sets comfortably, handing the red-and-white its third straight loss.

"We had our opportunities, especially set one; we were where we want to be, we didn't execute, and it was obvious," said head coach Luka Slabe. "Set two and set three, there were times where we were right there… We let it slip again in the same part of the game; passing and offense gave us hope and then took away more opportunities for us to score more points."
NC State found itself trailing for a large portion of the first set but finally took an 18-17 lead and had a chance to take the set up 24-22. However, the Heels took perhaps the world's best timeout and scored four straight points afterwards to stun the Pack and take a 1-0 set lead.
The two teams went back and forth again to start the second set. The Pack held a slim lead to begin, but UNC took the lead at 12-11 and didn't stop there, outscoring NC State 15-6 over the latter half to win 25-17 and take a commanding 2-0 lead.
It was do or die for the Pack in the third set. With both teams exchanging point streaks, it seemed as though NC State might've avoided the sweep, especially after trailing the Heels by just one point for a large stretch. However, Carolina turned on the burners at just the right time, winning six straight points thanks to some devastating kills and fierce defense, putting away the Pack with a third set score of 25-18.

Graduate opposite hitter Vanja Bukilic led the Pack in kills, putting up 13 on the night. Besides Bukilic, however, there weren't many other standouts for the red-and-white on the statsheet. As per usual, senior setter Kristen McDaniel led the effort in assists and recorded 11 digs while graduate libero Priscilla Hernandez led the squad in digs, tallying 14.
Although NC State didn't play nearly as well as it could have in the second and third sets, one can't help but look back at the end of the first set as a turning point. Just one point away from going up 1-0, the Pack couldn't close it out and the game went downhill from there.
"Any time you're up 24-22 and then you let it slip, that's a very tough thing for a team," Slabe said. "It was not like it was completely one-way traffic for another two sets. We didn't back down, we did compete, but [UNC] right now is just a better volleyball team than we are. They're doing everything on a little higher level, and we need to learn from that and keep pushing."
While tough to look for positives in a disappointing match like this, it's worth noting that Reynolds Coliseum was one of the most crowded it has been in a while for a volleyball match. The fans always show out when the red-and-white take on its rival from Chapel Hill, and while they didn't get the result they wanted, the fans proved they always show out to support the Pack, no matter the sport.
"Thank you to our fans for showing up," Slabe said. "I wish we would be able to reward them with a better result, but we plead with them to trust us, to keep supporting us, because we're trending the right way even though right now we're in a little rough spot the last couple weeks. We have a very exciting young group… This team's gonna continue getting better."
Another ACC showdown at Reynolds Coliseum is set for Friday, Oct. 28 as Clemson comes to town. First serve against the Tigers is set for 7 p.m.

NC State volleyball (12-10, 6-5) began its weekend slate with a win over ACC foe Clemson (12-11, 3-8) on Friday, defeating the Tigers in straight sets to earn its seventh 3-0 win of the year. It was the Wolfpack's third 3-0 sweep in conference play.

Freshman Ava Brizard led the way for the Pack offense with 16 kills, the most she's had in Reynolds Coliseum this season. Vanja Bukilic added 11 kills of her own, while NC State's offensive effort was aided by 18 assists from Naomi Cabello and 13 from Kristen McDaniel.

Defensively, Jada Allen posted eight blocks and a strong collective showing from the Pack limited the Tigers to two set scores below 15.

Set One (25-11)
NC State never trailed in the opening set, beginning with a 3-0 run and closing by winning 10 of the last 11 points. A dominant effort from the Pack was driven by taking advantage of 10 attack errors from Clemson.

Set Two (25-20)
After falling behind by as many as five points in the middle frame, NC State battled back from a 10-5 deficit to take its first lead at 14-13. The penultimate set was highlighted by a seven-point run driven by six service points from Naomi Cabello. A block from Allen ended the set to give the Pack a 2-0 edge and a 25-20 win.

Set Three (25-13)
Another strong showing from NC State led to a 25-13 win to close the match, with the Pack never trailing in a set for the second time of the night. NC State captured six of the last seven points en route to another dominant performance.

The NC State volleyball team snapped a three-match losing skid with an easy 3-0 sweep of the Clemson Tigers Friday, Oct. 28 in Reynolds Coliseum.
The Wolfpack (12-10, 6-5 ACC) dominated the first and third sets, winning them by a combined 26 points, and won the second set by five points to sweep the Tigers (12-11, 3-8 ACC).
NC State led from start to finish in the first set. With the score 12-9, the Pack went on an 8-1 run to go up 20-10. After the Tigers scored the next point, NC State scored the following five points to win the set 25-11.
The Pack had to come back in the second set as the Tigers led for a majority of the first half of the set. NC State finally caught up and took its first lead at 14-13 and never looked back. The closest Clemson got it was 20-19, but the Pack scored five of the next six points to win 25-20 and take a commanding 2-0 lead.

Just like the first set, it was all NC State in the third as it never trailed. The Pack went on a 5-0 run early on to go up 8-3, a lead it would hold the rest of the way. NC State dominated the latter half of the set, winning 10 of the final 13 points to clinch the set 25-13 and complete the sweep.
NC State won the battle of kills, tallying 44 to Clemson's 31, and the Pack was much more efficient offensively, finishing with a staggering hitting percentage of .388 while holding the Tigers to just .083. Another notable stat was that Clemson committed a whopping 21 attack errors and five service errors, while NC State committed just four attack errors and one service error.
Leading the Pack's efforts was freshman outside hitter Ava Brizard, who finished with a match-high 16 kills. Graduate opposite hitter Vanja Bukilic also finished in double digits with 11 kills. Graduate libero Priscilla Hernandez led all players in digs with 21, sophomore middle blocker Jada Allen led all in blocks with eight and junior setter Naomi Cabello led the team in assists with 18.
After losing three matches in a row and four of its last five, it was critical for NC State to get back on track against one of the ACC's lower-tier teams. The Pack now has a huge task ahead as it hosts No. 10 Georgia Tech on Sunday, Oct. 30. That match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
