National Co-Freshman of the Year Chris Newell of Virginia led the Atlantic Coast Conference contingent of student-athetes who earned spots on the 2020 Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-America team announced on Tuesday.

Newell, a center fielder from Newton Square, Pennsylvania, started all 18 games of the shortened 2020 season, batting .407 with four home runs, 20 RBIs and eight stolen bases.

Other ACC selections to the Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-America team include Clemson pitcher Geoffrey Gilbert; Florida State first baseman Dylan Simmons, third baseman Tyler Martin and pitcher Parker Messick; Georgia Tech first baseman Drew Compton, pitcher Dalton Smith and designated hitter Stephen Reid; Louisville second baseman Tim Borden II; NC State shortstop Jose Torres; Notre Dame utility player Jack Brannigan; Virginia second baseman Max Cotier, and Virginia Tech outfielder Gavin Cross.

Newell also earned second-team selection to the 2020 Collegiate Baseball All-America Team, which was announced May 26 and featured a dozen ACC players.

NC State baseball's Jose Torres was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, as recently announced by the publication. It marks the first recognition in his career, and sixth consecutive year the Wolfpack has placed at least one freshman on an All-America team.

The Baltimore, Md. native started all 17 games at shortstop, the most starts among all freshman in the 2020 season. He batted .333 with 20 hits and 13 runs batted in, including three doubles and three home runs.

Torres finished third on the team in hits and fourth in batting average, while tallying six multi-hit and four multi-RBI outings. On March 7 at Virginia, when he had a career-best 3-for-4 showing at the plate with three RBIs and a home run.

The rookie additionally finished the season on an eight-game reached base streak and four-game hit streak.
